Has everyone seen the 12-port head and 261 engine now listed on ebay? I have heard that the early 15-bolt heads can be modified to fit the 261, but I'm not sure how to do it.

Dear Mr. Hoyt; Yes they can. Harry Warner did one for me in the 60s. That head on e-bay is not an 'orginal'. It's one that Wayne & Harry made after they formed the Western Mechanical Development Co. Could fit as-is?? The missing rocker will come from a 41 Buick. Happy trails.

John,
Thanks for the reply. Do you know what needs to be done?

H; Yes; Some of the head bolt holes are moved slightly is all. You need to "play" with the rocker oiling sometimes too. The headers are no problem. You'll need to fabricate an intake manifold though. I don't see the sideplate or valve cover either. You'll need to make some pushrods too, or maybe the Buick ones are modified, can't remember. That's a "later model" & probably go for at least $4,000 as-is. Good luck.

I guess this guy is selling a complete Wayne set up in peaces he has 5 auctions. Makes it hard to get too excited about winning 5 times in a row. Oh well, I cant afford any one of them.

Since he claims 'Magnaflux' (yeah, like he keeps his milk in the frigidaire) I expect that's one of the iron heads (as opposed to one of the later aluminum catings, it's an awful dark shade of gray for aluminum too).

Yea; It's an iron one. The aluninum ones didn't come along till Bob Toros bought the paterns, around 1962. Looks like he has all the 'stuff' except the sideplate, 1 rocker & the pushrods. I sent him a question as to price for "all" TBA. Happy trails. PS: When I was a boy there were still "ice boxes" in homes where an "ice man" delevered the ice once a week. If you had a 'fridge' you were middle class or above.

Funny There were no bids on the 12 port - I guess the idea of splitting up the package, trying to increase its value, failed miserably.

T'weren't me. I notice it claims it was ended early due to 'an error in the listing'. What are the odds, he is a good seller and wants to get it right, or he's a practical seller and is trying not to get crossed up with ebay for selling it offline?
Just out of curiosity, how would the valve and port sizes on one of those work out on a 285+ CI Chevy stroker, for the street? I expect it would still be somewhat large, but with the ram stack type injection (electronic conversion) I expect you could make it 'come on' in the speed range you wanted. I expect it wouldn't be worth it (power wise) for a 'street' or 'road' engine, except for the 'cool points', if you could afford them.

In case there is anyone who hasn't found it, there is, in the 'Historical' page of the website, a reprint of the history of the Wayne heads and engines that was written by Herb Hall and featured in the first issues of the Twelve Port News. There is also a registry of the known survivors of the various heads.

Gentlemen; The early 'twelve ports' work well on any CID engine. The larger (GMC) the more benefit* as they 'breath' straight through.** This guy has all the pieces and will probably list it as an 'assembly', in the $4,000 range around "tax time". Good luck. (*) The "stroker" 285/292 are limited to 5,000 RPM so there wouldn't a (cost effective) benefit there. (**) The ('Sissel's) head probably does too, for 250/292 'later' engines, which rev much higher.
