Are these guys making the 1/4's longer on these cars or is it a optical illusion since the top is chopped and its lowered?

Oh yeah what is sectioning??

Sectioning is where you cut a section out of the body of the car below the windows (includes the fenders too, unless it's fenderless).

As to your original question, it's hard to tell, but I expect it's an optical illusion.

My, what a steep learning curve. Erik II#5155

What is the point in sectioning? Are they welding more metal in to make the panel wider?

the quarters look stock to me. 49-50 Have a rounded off look to them that the 51-52's don't have. those cars have been chopped and lowered, but not sectioned.

The point of sectioning is the same as any other body modification. Its to give the car a "certain look", just like chopping, lowering, etc...
Its all in the eye of the beholder...

This Chevy has not been sectioned, just chopped and the roof laid down. A pretty straight forward chop and drop for this model.

When you want the low look without chopping the roof, one would "section" the body. This involves taking 1-4" out of the body horizontally and thus lowering the beltline, roof. The effect would be like raising the chassis and fenders.
This was a very "East Coast" way of customizing in the 50's. This type of customizing is not done much today as it is very difficult.

Starting in "49, the rear fenders were no longer "bolted on", they are part of the body shell.
