I have a lead on a flatsix from an early Fifties 2 ton. Owner says it has "Spitfire" cast into the head.
Would this be a Chrysler 265? Thanks....T120

I believe the spitfire is the cyl.head. You could measure the cyl. head, if its 23 inches it probably a 218 or 230, if it measures 25 inches its a 251 or 265 ci.

If it says Spitfire on the head, it should definitely be one of the long motors. If it is a '53 or later, it might be a 265. If it's earlier than that, it's probably a 251.

My 1947 Chrysler (251) doesn't have the "Spitfire" head. What's the difference, if any, between the plain head and the Spitfire?

I've never seen a post war Chrysler that didn't have the Spitfire head. I think the motor is refered to as the Spitfire 6 in the sales literature. I'm not aware of there being any optional compression ratio like on some pre-war cars.

According to "The Dodge Story", the Spitfire head is a higher compression head used on the 230 ci engine in the last few years of production. I think the engines using that head were rated at around 150 hp.
They were supposedly available as an option as early as 1949, but that isn't confirmed in the book that I have.
There may have been a Spitfire head available for the long block motors as well.

Ok gang...just picked up what I think is a 251 out of a '53 Dodge 3 ton.
It has a huge 4 bolt exhaust flange...looks to be the same flange as on the '57-'58 300C-300-D exhaust manifold.
I will pull the head to see what bore/stroke soon.....
