I'm wondering what the acceptable main bearing clearance should be for my 230 flathead. I used plastigauge to check the clearance on my bearings, and all four main bearings measure .002" clearance. These bearings are .010" oversized for my .010" undersized NOS crank. My repair manual desribes checking the clearance with shim stock and checking for "fairly heavy drag", and says that .001" to .0015" is the maximun desired clearance. Do I have a problem at .002"?

Any input greatly appriciated. Thanks, Pete

PS- What should the rod bearing clearance be?

Factory clearances are a little on the tight side. I personally would rather it be around .002/.0025 on both rods and mains for spirited street use.

Thanks for the reply Del, I'm going ahead with the main bearings at .002". I have not checked the rod bearings yet, thats next.

Thanks again, Pete
