What make of engine are you talking about? Mopar did not have a 216 nor a 261 engine nor do they use a gear to drive the distributor.

Dear Bill;

Don's correct; I'm guessing you ment this in the egines section.

The 'early' engines used a cast iron camshaft.
Sometime around 1954 they went to a steel one and and a steel distributor gear was made/from then on.

We all changed them (gears)'back then' on our Hot Rods because the racing cams were steel & they were easy to get (new) @ the Chevrolet Dealer.

Today It's not that big a deal. The iron one will work, but the steel one is better etc.

Good luck. \:\)

I have been told that the early cams and gears for the Chevrolet 216-235-261 engines were steel and the later (1955 and later) were cast iron. What is it?

John H. I'm getting two different answers about the composition of the distributor gears, is it steel or cast iron prior to 1955?
Thanks for the info

Bill
