I don't recall AMC making their own automatic transmissions. What automatic transmission will bolt to a 258 engine? Does anyone have pictures of the Mexican heads or engines?

It's the same thing as a Ford cast iron cruisomatic ( FMX ). The guy I used to work with had a '69 AMX with one. Don't know about the bell housing bolt pattern. The bell housing and tranny come apart like a stick shift on that style tranny.

Del

Bill,

Way back AMC used Borg Warner. Starting somewhere around 1968-9-70? they started using Chrysler Torque Flites. 903's I think.

Pre 70 they used The old Borg warner Flash-o-matics and later on they used (just for a short while) Chevy autos, but only in the Jeeps I think. From 73 up they used only the Torqueflites 904, 998, and 727 in thier cars, the 904/998 has the same case but the 998 is a medium duty, while the 904 is a light duty. Dont get me wrong, the 904 was installed behind almost all half of AMC motors and is light and stout in the smaller motors, five liters and down, not massive torque. The 998 is a tough meduim duty rig, and was installed behind most of the Sixes newer than 79-80. the Jeep 999 is the same thing.

Hi Trusty258,

Do you have any experience with the AX 15 5 speeds? (I think I have the model right) Are they strong?, reasonably cheap to repair?, shift O.K.? Where are they made?
If you can help I'd appreciate it.

HI Jim, Sorry, No experience with the AX15 5spds, Other than what I read On Offroad.com
Which says that its a medium duty type, and has an all aluminum case. From what i have heard and seen from a Frineds 258 Backed by a T-4 and T-176 they are older simpler and Tougher than a bag of hammers. Offroad has a Good section on AMC/Jeep Transmissions, autos and sticks. Though the T-4/5 are technically light duty units they are rugged Plentiful and they have a tight smooth pattern. Mustangs with all kinds of motors used the T-4/5s which are four and five speed stickshifts. They are also common to the CJ era jeeps, Before they went to Wranglers the later CJ transmissions were T-4/5s. If at all possible, avoid the
SR-4. It looks like the T-4/5 but has no ribs on the outside of the case and has been known in my area to suffer from case stretch behind four cylinders.

Good luck Keep us posted on thoughts.

Jim, I got some dirt on the Ax 15s, and that is they're Rugged, There the only new Trnasmission Mentioned on the Novak site and the stuff they talk about is the Heavy duty stuff, like the Warner T-18s and Muncie SM 465s, if they discuss it with the Heavies they its probably pretty rugged. I have no First hand experince, with them though, and i have read that many use an internal Slave cylinder and throwout.

My postal jeep came with a 232 6 in line, and a 727 torqueflite from factory. I've been told I am lucky, the 727's are the best ones from that time.

The 727 is a piece that you will probably never break. I use a 904 that stalls at 5600 on an 8 inch Coan, great trans for me.
