I bought an engine for my Nova and and the casting number on the block is 3877178, can I determine if is a 230 or 250 without tearing it down? It does not have the boss for the Z-Bar ball and the compression 126 +/- 3 lbs per cyl. Is there a way to read the date stamps cast towards the rear of the black casting number?

I have the same engine. I thought it was a 250 until I pulled the valve cover and saw the head casting number 3872708.

stamped numbers next to the distributor may help.

Otherwise, a stock 250 would have dished pistons, the 230 would be flat. Pull a spark plug and take a look.

What are the casting numbers after "CON 2"? (passenger side by the dipstick)

December 14th 1975 is what I came up with. Not sure about the 0 though. So that would make it a 250. If you want get me the stamped code by the distributor and maybe we can find out what kind of sheet metal in rolled out of the factory in. ;\)

Could anyone tell me if I have a 230 or 250. It was represented as a pull from a 1967 3 Spd Camaro.,

It is stamped on a boss near distributor, " F1202LP "
Embossed on engine block, " C012 X306 3877178 GM 49"
Intake, "K306 3850381"
Exhaust manifold, "K308 GM 83 390 24"

Pull the plugs and take a look at the top of the pistons, If you see a dish Then it's a 250 And yes the dish can be seen from the
plug hole as you slowly move the piston in the bore.

The 230 will have a shorter stroke-if you could somehow measure it. That was how I found out my '250' was in fact a 230, but mine had the head off at the time.
