I've found what I believe is a 261 in a canadian 60 Pontiac. I couldn't locate the block casting number, but its a 4 bolt valve cover, as well as the captains bars are above the starter. This is the number off the head 386848. If any one has a clue to the head let me know.

This is the "848 head," the head of choice for marginally higher compression in 235s and 261s. The 261 truck engines in the US were not originally fitted with these heads, and the block requires modification so that "steam holes" match in both head and block if the 848 head is to be used.

God's Peace to you.

Locate the block casting number, look behind the starter, some 235's got out with the "Captain's Bars" cast into the block so it's not a sure thing. I know because I have one myself. The 848 head is another clue as stated above. Good luck with the "261".

my 261 came from a '61 canadian pontiac and had the 848 head with steam holes...it was a low mileage engine that had never been opened...sooo...it would appear 848 heads were stock on pontiac 261's.........

Does anyone know the compression ratio on these heads. How much can it be milled?
