I just received the current copy of FAST's quarterly magazine (hot model A's and T's) and it has an interesting article about valve timing. Basically, it said that there was better performance to be had by opening the intake valve between 5 and 10 degrees before TDC but that most flathead cams open after TDC. The guy writing the article is “T" man so his engines are going to top out just north of 3,000RPM. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

They used to open ATDC because for low RPM and low compression the total duration wasn't that far above 180°, and the amount after 180 was added to the intake closing side.
Overlap was viewed originally as the Devil's own instrument ("how could the engine possibly run with both valves open?"), then grudgingly accepted (in very small doses) as a price to be paid for longer events ("it has to go somewhere!"), and finally realized as a way to greatly increase power (Joe Craig, late 1930s?).
Is 3,000 the magic speed at which a T banger begins to need more overlap? IDK, ask a cam grinder.
