I blew up the clutch in my 292 pickup on the weekend so we pulled it out last night and chased down the parts today. While I had the T-5 out, I replaced the seals on the input bearing retainer and in the tailshaft housing along with a good coating of silicone around the big frost plug in the front of the case. I hate leaks on the shop floor. Anyways, we drained the fluid and I replaced it with Mobil Synthetic Automatic Fluid. Got it back together and running tonight and took it out for a test run. The trans shifts a lot smoother now even when I am down shifting. Has anybody else used this fluid in their T5 ? I am impressed with it, work real nice.

Actually, had read about it on the Saturn forum. I also have a Vue with the 5 speed in it and a few of the guys on that forum had posted their results from using it in their Saturns.

Only problem I know of is synthethic fluids cause older types of RTV sealants to disolve. When g.m. came out w/ Dexron VI they issued a service bulletin stating that it would service back to 1949 in all g.m. automatic transmissions but not to use it in manual transmissions and transfer cases that called for Dexron III and earlier fluids. same issue on g.m. rear axles, i.e. RTV cover sealant on 9.5" semi-floating & axle shaft to hubs on some 10.5" full floaters. Have seen some engine that use RTV at the ends of the intake manifold develop leaks after switching to synthetic oils.

Glad to hear it. I like the Mobile 1 synthetic ATF in everything I've tried it in. I use the 'Right Stuff' brand name sealant (gasket maker, puckey, goop, whatever ya wanna call it) and have good luck with it, even with synthetics (oil, ATF, antifreeze even water, no fuel yet, don't recall if that's reccomended for it or not ).
My, what a steep learning curve. Erik II#5155

I am running the GM MY6 variant of the A833 OD tranny behind a GMC 270 and when I switched from 90wt to ATF (both are recommended by GM) - the shifting smoothness improved dramatically.
I just wrapped up a 4wk 6300 mile cross country trip and it performed flawlessly.

I am now wondering if there is truth to the synthetic fluid and silicones. The trans now appears to be developing a leak again after driving it and then parking back in the shop. Next morning there is telltale evidence of a fluid leak. Have to try a different fluid. Any other recommendations of fluids that are working for you guys?

It's true! Older RTV sealants and many gaskets don't like synthetic fluids.

X2 just about ever engine build that I know of has switched to the Right Stuff.
I used to use permatex copper silicone - no more this right stuff has never leaked on my - just wipe the surfaces/spray the down with lacquer thinner - allow to dry and apply - never had a leak.
GM is using this on all there new engines - no more cut gaskets - just sealer.
Matter in fact i think the only place they use a cut gasket these days in on Auto trans pan gaskets.
51 GMC 4.2 turbo Can't solved today's problems using the same technology/thinking that created them

The RTV sealer G.M. uses for service is gray in color, p/n 12378521, 5.3 oz calk gun tube. BTW, the general still uses plenty of gaskets.

I've had good success with The Right Stuff as well. One time I broke 3 of the 4 intake mani. corner bolts off in the heads of a SBF. I gooped up the intake gaskets and tightened up the bolts that were left. It has ran several derbies without leaking water, surviving intense heat cycles.
