After many years of nitrous use we decided to try a budget turbo setup on the ole' 292. A goal of 1000 flywheel horsepower is what we are shooting for. A turbonetics 78mm BB turbo will create the boost and a water to air intercooler will cool it off. A budget header from 1 1/2 sch 10 304 stainless will handel all the spent gasses. Turbo smart wastgate and blow off valve handel the boost as an AMS 1000 boost controller. There are so many details I'm forgeting right now. Here is a little progress picture.

After I thought about it for a little while most members here do not know this setup. All the old timers would remember, but this is the OLD SETUP. It made 800 flywheel HP.

Mighty impressive is what I'd call it! Good luck, you should have no trouble at all reaching those goals and beyond!

ThatŽs some great news, Steven!!

YouŽll keep your nitrous Camshaft??
I think with no more than 14~16 psi, youŽll be near the 1000hp, easy!!!

Good luck on this new setup. For sure it will be much better and much painless than the nitrous setup!!!

Keep us informed of how it goes.

I bought a Turbo like yours, a Turbonetics Y2K with 88mm, and IŽll be testing it in a couple weeks. I think with that turbo, we could shut-off the nitrous to wake up the turbo, like we are using right now with the Bullseye S491.

Thanks guys! The picture doesnt do the turbo justice. It looks real dinky in there and little. In fact it is a real tight fit when we get ready for all the plumming.

The cam is at Comp Cams getting reground with less overlap.

Man, We hope so because a nitrous motor like this is a maintance nightmare.

I would like to know the outcome of the smaller turbo.

Yes we are finally working on it this weekend. Mounted the air to water intercooler in the engine compartment. Mocking up the plumbing from the turbo to the intercooler. We are running the exhaust pipe from the turbo.

Next, I will start fabricating the water tank for the intercooler. Parts seem to come in so slow for all this stuff.

I will try to post some pictures of the progress Monday or Tuesday.

Wow, and it all still fits under that little hood? That is some fine work!

Pretty impressive.

Is the turbo drawing air from back by the firewall, or is there a snorkel of some sort?

Yes it will draw the inlet air by the firewall. It is a good 6-8 inches away from it. With the turbo turned around there would be a better chance of getting a rock thrown in it. So with a water to air intercooler dropping the intake temps. We felt it may not matter which way the turbo was faceing. It is really hard to see but all the pipeing is a real tight fit.

BTW-The exhaust is going out though the fender. It is not finished yet.

Thank you.

Yes, I'm sure you have at least 7 Lbs in that '5 Lb rated sack'. \:\)

I just started looking at this and am impressed by the sanitary super clean look of it all right away.

I have never seen an intake manifold formed like that and was wondering how that design even came up in the planning stages?

Thanks

The design was borrowed from several diffrent areas. The basic idea is from the V8 guys.
