A Chevy 250 I just picked up has casting numbers 93403466. I am hoping it is a truck block so it will be easy to turn into a manual trans engine. Where do I look for z-bar holes on this block?

Also I just want to freshen the engine up and plan to change the waterpump, head gasket (maybe surface the head), cam, pushrods and lifters. Can anyone think of anything else before I go tearing in to it?

James

Z-bar?, Never heard that before.

New cam, stock?

Lap the valve seat if your not having the valves ground. Then check for pits.

What's the oil pressure at thermostat temp?

The Z-bar as I refer to it is the pivot that goes between the block and the clutch fork.

Cam is a eBay item old Wolverine cam with useful torque range 1500-5000, exact specs not available.

Lap the valve seat? I was not going to go into the head much at all. But Since I noticed a little water seepage on the plug side of the head, I will pop the head off and run it down to the machine shop. I do not want to do headwork here as I will eventually buy a head from a noted head builder. But i will clean this one up surface the head, and reinstall with new gasket.

Engine is out of car on a stand right now, so no guess as to the oil pressure. I do know that it did not smoke.

That's right, I forgot z-bar. Duh! There should be two bolt holes under the exhaust manifold about 4&5. The pivot for the z-bar mounts there.

Sounds like a good cam, nice rpm range.

Lapping the valves with valve grinding compound is a good way find any spots where the valve might be going bad. If your going to replace the head anyway, it maybe unnecessary.

My old tired 292 didn't smoke much either, but the compression wasn't anything to brag about. The oil pressure wasn't bad, about 30# warmed up and at idle. I kind of like to know those two things before I put much effort into an engine.

Sounds like you have a plan, Good Luck.

James if you look at Leos Book you will see where they should be.
