Hello.
I have a friend who lives in another state and just picked up a Chevy 292 6. He's looking to find out what kind of truck his engine came in and what the factory accessories were.

Anyway, the code behind the distributor is mco6594. I don't have a listing for this. Do you?

The code behind the distributor on your friend's block does not follow the normal convention for 250, 292 blocks. Usually the first digit indicates the plant of origin and for sixes it is usually an F for Flint.
The only thing I can come up with is a section on an "M" coded block on the following web site

Hi Al.
He says it's a Mexican block so our guess is that "m" in the code may be for Mexico.

If its a Mexican block, it will have "Hecho en Mexico" cast in big letters in the side of the block, so it will be easy to find and identify. A Mexican block is also very desirable to have.

I'm thinking that the codes might be Mexico only so who knows what system they had.

If you go to the thread Mystery Motor in the engine section there is a link to a page of all Chevy engine serial #'s and Prefexes. Also I have a Mexico 292 it has made in Mexico on the side of block and also casting # is unique to Mexico Motors

Is there a particular reason that an engine made in Mexico is more desirable than an engine made in the U.S.A.?

Thicker casting in general, from what I read anyway.

Yes, they are a thicker casting, mostly in the cylinder walls.

I read somewhere that there was less core shift in the Mexican Blocks.

I know I have sonic checked a whole lot of US, Canadian and Mexican blocks, and you still get good and bad in all of them, But the Mexican blocks consistently were thicker all the way around in the cylinders, especially on the major thrust side. You also occasionally would get a US or Canadian block that was also just as thick as a Mexican block, but not often.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. Next time I see a Mexican L6 engine, I'll certainly get it if the price is fair.
