OK, I have a 84 250 with the integrated head. The motor is pulled And I want to rebuild with a regular head. I need to know what year heads will match. Also most of the rebuild kits I see have yearly time frames example-67-79. So if I end up with a older head will I have to order a custom kit? I would appreciate any advise as I am new to this and most of the advise I get from all of my shadetree friends and relatives is very conflictive.Thanks.

To my knowledge any 194-230-250-292 non-integrated head will bolt on your block. The difference in the rebuild kit is probably just gaskets. Ask for a rebuild kit for a '70 vintage 250, for example, and you'll be good to go.

If possible, buy a complete early engine, not just the head. That way you get all the parts you might need such as fasteners, valve cover, brackets, etc.

The only parts to worry about is the cam bearings. They are year specifec. A bearing/ ring kit for your year would be fine. The heads as stroker said from any non integrated engine will work. Tom

Thanks alot. I have been researching on the net alot and wanted to get some trustworthy advise before I start forking out what little money I do have. Any good suggestions on a good kit? I have looked at cliffords super rebuild kit but it seems to be a bit pricey. Dont know if its worth it.

For stock type parts I've been happy with Northern Auto Parts.

Keeter, Let me suggest that you decide which components you are going to use before ordering any parts. You mentioned you want improved performance. Does that mean a cam change? More carburetion? Dual exhausts? Increased compression? Make a plan; reconcile the parts choices with what you read on these forums so you have a compatible package and then order / shop for stuff. Good luck.
