I have a 292 with an early head 194.. Same intake/exhaust it appears. Just picked up some split shorty headers and an offy intake and want to get opinions on who makes the best gasket for these shorty headers. Thank you

Which gasket is best? I'm not sure, but I used a FelPro upper set when I bebuilt mine. I have had no problems. I haven't heard of many problems, if any, using Felpro gaskets in non racing applications. I've used FelPro gaskets on alot of automotive repairs and never had a problem.

But I would guess that if you're using tube style headers, that you'll experience either/or broken headers bolts or flange welds long before the gasket gives up. I'm sure someone else will chime in if they disagree.

Ya I initially installed the fel yet even after a torque I can still slide a feeler in. I know with some heat and such they should be ok yet there are so many great header gaskets for v8's these days I figured someone might be putting out something great that I wont have to double gasket. I see a few different ones offered at Jegs and headman makes a set, figured someone can give me a thumbs up on one.. I am a big block guy and in building this apache I wanted to go different and I just wont own a small block.. Basicly because everyone has one.. So if its not big block its going to be inline for me.

Just make sure the surfaces on the flanges are flat.

You might try Remflex gaskets. I got a set for my 292. I haven't had to put them on yet, but they sure look good.

I use felpro performance 1448 for the exhaust and the standard pressed metal felpro on the intake. With the standard one , I have to cut the intakes away from the exh because it is a 1 piece design. Tom
