I scored an HEI distributor from a 4.3 thinking I could convert it for my 248. In searching for info about it I read where people are taking them out of their 4.3s and installing 230 distributors.

What is the story on that? Are these unreliable or what?

4.3 V6 distributor won't fit your GMC.
The 2 HEI conversions I know of to fit the early GMC (as well as chevy 235) are:
Langdons Stovebolt, built from 2.8 V6 distributor. (small cap, remote coil)
Larrow & Sons, built from 250 / 292 distributors. ('75 remote coil, later coil in cap. Both big cap)
I've run Langdons for 2 years (about 6) am please with performance & look.
BTW, I,ve got a Mallory dual point,Promaster coil, cap, rotor & wires I'd love to part with!

Thanks for the info. I'm wanting to convert one like Langdon does. What vehicles would I look at to find a 2.8 V6 distributor?

Check the price from Langdons. He has already done all the design & machine work and I thought the price was good.
I'm not out to undercut his business so I'm not saying what aplication he uses. If you ask him he can tell you if he wants.

It's funny you should mention this. At Hershey last year he told me he's not selling as many of those distributors as he used too.
I jokingly told him it was his own fought because he's told eveyone what he does and now many just make their own.

There are instructions on the web. I just asked what vehicle I would find one in. I happen to prefer doing things myself rather than pay someone else $200 to do something I can do. Even if I had the money to throw away, I'd still do my own work when I can.

I also find that most people who build cars with their checkbook have bad attitudes.

The 4.3 Chevy V6 distrib is the same as the V8 Chevy distrib except for the internal electronics and of course advance curves. Neither will fit a Chevy inline but will physically drop into the V6 or V8.

Put the V8 unit in the V6 and you have 2 extra plug wires to light your flame throwers. Put the V6 unit in the V8 and remove the 2 unused spark plugs and you save gas and can pump up your air bags with them. * this tech tip courtesy of Red Green * LOL

My point is: a very nice inliner has a part that is very reasonably priced. Anyone that knows me will atest to my being frugal (cheap?, so not sure who that coment is aimed at. You asked if a 4.3 V6 distributor would fit, not a question that would lead one to belive you could design and build your own, perhaps my mistake.
