New guy questions.
I have a '41 Special Deluxe and plan a 292/T5.
It has to have a period look with modern concessions for safety/reliability.(i.e. multi carbs on modern 6, HEI, disk on IFS. etc)
I want to make it a road car, and MPG is important.

1) should I be considering a 250 or 292? (the bible says 292)

2) T5 or possibly a 3sp/OD column shift. (no slushboxes)

anything else?

I like '41s. Since you say MPG is important and it has to have period look I would go with a 250 and column shift 3sp/OD. I like the way the old Borg Warner ODs work. They are fun to drive but parts are much easier to find for T-5s, especially on the road.

Thanks,
Just trying to do my research, I don't want to regret a decision.
I hate doing something twice, hate it!
I want to have a car that is a joy to drive and not end up a slug with P/S and the A/C on.

Have you considered a late model efi 6? More power and better mileage.

I have had a '40 Coupe for over 12 years now and I'm very satisfied with my drive train. 1970 292, bored .030, Wolverine 270 cam, 1982 T-5 from a 305 Z-28, stock & rebuilt 1968 Nova 10 bolt with 3:55, 30" tall tires in back.

I get over 20mpg on the highway and about 18 in town. It has the Offy 3x1 with 5200 holley/Webers and auto choke. Pertronics II Electric ignition and Langdon's Headers. I have never needed to adjust or tinker with the motor for over ten years (20,000 miles)

Make sure you go with a water heated intake manifold. It makes you ride very streetable. Plenty of power and with the right mufflers, respect!
