How does having a turbo affect power brakes? Is there anything special that needs to be done? Under boost, it makes sense that you would be losing manifold vacuum. Are hydroboost units a better option?

My GMC Syclone has a power brake booster & I believe it just has a check valve installed into the brake booster. It looks like a standard check valve that goes into the booster rubber gromet.

Hydroboost units work better period than a vacuum assisted brake system.

W/hyroboost, the brakes are seeing 2000 PSI or there abouts @ all times.

It's not really problem. How ofter are you in boost and braking at the same time?
You also don't have vacuum at WOT on a naturally aspirated engine.

I originally was going to go with a hydroboost system. I have the opportunity to obtain a 1/2 ton van for free. The only thing I can use off of it are the steering column and master cyl./booster. So, I guess vacuum boost it is.

I've seen some Turbo Coupes with an electic vac booster. It got me thinking if a standard vacuum setup is enough. It makes sense, when your throttle closes, your manifold has all the vacuum in the world. No real problem I guess.

The problem that all Syclones & Typhoons have with the factory vacuum assist brakes, is that when boost launching the vehicles push through the brakes.

We install larger rear wheel cylinders to help reduce the pushing through the brakes which helps.

But there are guys that have installed hydra boost units from Astro vans & now they have hold the brakes & boost launch @ 20+ PSI no problem.

Or when you don't want to run a power steering pump or don't have one then an electric pump such as:

would do the trick.

Or you could pirate an electric power steering pump off a mini cooper (the new Beemer built ones) to run a hydro boost setup.

My plans are for an Atlas 4200 swap into my 54 3600. I've already worked out a disc brake setup. My goal now is a functioning Booster/MC setup. My buddy has a '99 van that's only good for parts. So when the words, "free," pop up, I'm always listening.
