I have a late 60's 292 engine (block 3851659) with lump port head and a 390 Holley carburetor with HEI.

When timing this engine, do I time it to GM specifications for the late 60's or do I time it for HEI? I've got about three miles on the engine so far and it's not behaving the way I want it to.

What cam is in the engine? Once you begin modifying the engine to some degree, the factory specs no longer apply, but are only baseline starting points.

The cam is the Sissel Hydraulic cam, Grind #272-H

Duration .292 I; .292 E

Lift .871 I and E

Lobe Centerline 107

ASk Kirby he can give you a base line to start with. I like the lift on that cam :).
But i feel your base is going to be around 12BTDC at the vary least.With a total over 32@ 3800.And will no dout have a idle around 12-1500.
But i could be wrong so just my 2cents.

The 272-H's Duartion is 210 I; 212 E

The lift is .490 I; .508 E
