Bought an HEI distributor on e-bay for my 292 lump port head engine. Tom Langdon strongly suggests using vacuum advance, but each time I hook up vacuum line to the distributor, the engine coughs, sputters, and just doesn't run right. Tried re-timing all over the board, but that doesn't help either. It's as if the distributor is advanced too much too fast. Once I remove vacuum line and plug it up, the engine runs great. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem when I put an adjustable vac adv in the HEI on my 292. The problem was mention in the docs with the adj vac adv, and there was a limiter included in the kit. It's a known problem and there are several limiters available here are links;

I installed the limiter and adjusted it, problem solved.

Thanks, Larry. A Crane limiter is on its way.

Gearge, it did take some trial and error to find the correct adjustment.

Beater, glad to help with what meager knowledge I have.
