Had problems with vacuum advance for my HEI distributor. Somebody on this forum suggested a vacuum advance limiter. I purchased a vacuum advance limiter and unfortunately that did not help either. So, I ordered a more expensive distributor. Received my second HEI distributor on Wednesday, this time from Summit, for my 292. And the engiine's still not running right. It advances so fast and so far that the engine bogs or backfires. I've upped the timing and downed the timing, and yet I am having no success with solving this problem. Any ideas as to what I can do to rectify this problem? I'm leaving this coming Wednesday on a Street Rodder tour. Thanks in advance.

What is your engine combo?
What carb, camshaft etc?

Carb no good? Camshaft on it's way out?

iF YOU ARE USING STRAIGHT MANIFOLD VACUUM TRY USING A PORTED SIGNAL. yOUR CARB SHOULD HAVE ONE OF THESE PORTS THAT COMMUNICATES A SIGNAL FROM JUST ABOVE THE THROTTLE PLATE(S).

If it really is the vac advance:
Just disconnect it!
If U run a fast mechanical curve (say 10 initial, 34-36 total all in by 2500-2800) U can run with NO vac and do pretty good.
U will lose a couple MPG, and be a tad sluggish at cold part throttle but it will get U to your meet and back just fine.

That's a pretty quick curve for regular pump gas but a good compromise if running w/no vacuum.

What is your timing curve now, with vac disconnected?
