Just a discussion on what you guys think about lump ports! And questions if there are any!

My question is for those who have installed them(maybe some info for those who plan on installing them) are you sealing the gaps onthe intake walls by the lumps with anything, if so what?

For a street engine, I don't worry about sealing up a small side gap.

I chose to spend time fitting the lumps as closely as possible to minimize gaps. By this I mean marking, grinding, filing, repeat until fit was very close.

I installed a set of tom's lumps in a head last year just to do it. Watched his video on u- tube, bought the tools on eBay, and redid the head. Yes, I used the sawzall method, lol. It was great fun, I learned a lot, made some mistakes but it all worked out in the end. I did use some jbweld on the floor of the intake port just before I set the lump in, and on the sides to fill in the gap. Polished it all up. Don't know how it will run, have to build the rest of the motor now.

I wanted to build a 292 to put into my 57 chevy but did not have the time to sort out the swap issues in that I wanted a bolt in thing, without having to cut or weld on the frame or cross member to do it. For the moment it is on hold while I bulid a 261 which will drop right in. The 292 was originally going in a 31 chevy roadster that I was building as an altered for nostalgia drags. That project is on hold and I am not sure whether I am going to finish it. So forth moment the 292 is in limbo.

i know this should probably be in the turbo/fi zone but i feel it can slide into here aswell

what kind of head gaskets are you guys running on turboed engines

i heard for the first time of a thing called a steam hole and it has me second guessing( also makes the difference between an 18 dollar gasket and a 55 dollar gasket)

are they important for a daily driver

been doing some reading and they say yes..

I had to go to a Cometic gasket on my turbo 292. I popped two 1025s. Tom recommended I up the torque on the lump port bolts to get closer to the head stud higher torque. I only made a few passes since but it held at 15 lbs boost for a split second until I blew a silicone elbow. Looking forward to this season.

The lump bolts are at 95 and studs are at 100. The 15 lbs was totally by accident. I made a few passes at 7-8 lbs and was going to go to 10. Well one more turn on the controller and the hose blew at 15 as I was coming off the throttle. Lucky I found a weak link before something major happened. It was the last race last year so we'll see in a couple of months. That extra boost sure felt good but I want the thing to last. Also when I blew the other head gaskets I was running pump gas and I don't don't know where the boost gauge was because I was watching the track. I have meth injection but I didn't try it last year. Now it will be race gas and water/methanol. Should be fun.

I will be running pump gas in az our octance is 91. For the premium what kind of hp/tq areyou getting? Is your car strickly a drag car? And yes very fortunate about finding that weak link! I can't to feel the boost in my truck! You're making me jealous!

Yes my car is a drag car. Engine wise it is totally streetable the car (53 Stude) with aluminum interior and a roll cage just makes it tough. I've never dynoed my engine but my best mph in the 1/8 mile is 90. At 3300 lbs that, according to the formulas takes 392 hp at the rear wheels. I hope to get some better ideas in a couple of months.

I'm sure it will run high 11s with the current tune. When I get the boost up to 10 and the water/meth on it should be faster. I have pictures but I'm not computer literate enough to get them on.

Nothing special at all. A 292 bored .040, Ross pistons from Tom, Delta Turbo solid cam, Roller rockers from Tom, Smith push rods, lump ports with some home porting, 1.94-1.50 valves, 3 angle valve job, Clifford intake with a Holley 750 double pumper w/ some mods, homemade stainless header w/4" exhaust. Lower end is stock w/ ARP hardware. The turbo is a chinese GT45 off ebay. $238.00. Thats about it, I wanted to get better rods but the price was to high. I will have to watch the boost. This certainly wasn't the cheapest build I've ever done but it has been the most fun.
