Hi I am in the process to go through the DMV in Switzerland (Europe) with my 1950 Buick Sedanet and need an "evidence" that the mounted electrical fans (behind the original radiator) where also available back in 1950. Does someone have any information about electrical fans in 1950? What the administration guy want is something out of a manual or original literature.
Any help/information to get this information is very appreciated!!!
never thought i would say this, i`m glad i only have to deal with california dmv. i would do what racers do, cheat until you get caught and whine when you do. pull the fan ,add a little alchohol to the cooling system and have it inspected.
GM didn't offer an electric radiator fan in '50 nor did the aftermarket. Cars of that era were equipped with 6 volt generators that typically produced ~35 amps. A cooling fan can pull more amperage then this on its own. AFAIK these fans did not appear until much later . . . perhaps the '70s or the '80s.
I would say that your best bet is to refit a belt driven fan - get past the DVM inspection - and then refit the electric one afterwards . . .
