I have a 31 chevy pickup. I also have a dead 53 235 and a good 270 gmc. I want to put he 270 in the 31 with the 235 bell housing and flywheel, but i'm not sure if the 235 flywheel will work on the gmc. what do you think ?

thanks Jay D

The 235 bellhousing should bolt to your 270 with no problem. A '48-'51 Chevrolet pickup bellhousing is what i have behind a 302, with a 153-tooth Chevrolet v-thing flywheel and clutch assembly and a Saginaw four-speed.

i don't think the 235 flywheel will be a good choice behind the GMC.

God's Peace to you.

Does your 270 have 4 or 6 flywheel bolts? In the "old days" they used '39 Chevy truck flywheels. I think because the clutch surface was bigger than Chevy cars and it was lighter than the GMC. Often the 4 bolts were drilled for 8 bolts. Tell us about your '31. Do you have pictures? The 270 is a good choice.

Don does the V8 flywheel fit or did you have to modify it? What starter?

As i recall, Vic Holley had to drill the flywheel mount on the crankshaft to match the v-thing (Hays aluminum) flywheel. He also modified the '54 Chevrolet 12-volt starter to engage the flywheel.

God's Peace to you.

thanks for the input. my crank is 6 hole and the bell housing is a 53 pickup. i'll see if I can post some pictures soon, its kinda in pieces right now. i'm going to run the gmc with headers, 2 or 3 carbs, and a mild cam. I would like to run Harley cv carbs 3 of them side draft. I have a Camaro t5 trans and a Toyota 4x4 rear axel. witch I my change to an 8 in. ford as their are more gear ratios available. this is just going to be an low budget daily driver. i'm getting ready to put a later chev pickup front axel (53) in after total rebuild so I will have hyd. brakes on the front. as near as I can tell it should bolt right in. i'm also going to try and put an early Toyota 4x4 power steering gear on. I think i'll just keep looking for a gmc flywheel. sad thing is I must of had 5 or 6 of them but got rid of them, I thought I would never use one.

The bell housing will work. I used 55-57 car 235's for years on my 302's. 235 Flywheel is a question, I've never seen it done. I currently have a BB Chev redrilled for the 6 bolt GMC. Ron Hamel of 10,000 RPM said they were the same for distances (starters, etc) when he built flywheels for our GMC's.. Good Luck
