Hello all, I just brought home a 1955 261 from a 6400 dump truck..engine needs to be completely gone through but I have looked for the yellow paint from Filling Station, Truck Shop and many forums...no luck. I know it has been asked here before but figured I would ask again.

Does anyone know the color code for the 261 between 1955-1957 that Chevy had painted Yellow? I would really like to go back with the original factory color. Thank you for any help.

I have never seen a paint code mentioned in conjunction with the yellow 261s - even over at VCCA. My understanding is that 261s were painted a different color so they weren't mistaken for run of the mill engines in truck assembly plants. There may well be nothing special about the shade and the folks in Flint used whatever yellow paint the guys in Purchasing bought.

The good news is that you've got paint still adhered. [Linked Image]

You could go to a hardware store with a big chip of the actual yellow paint from your engine. White Rustoleum could be used for the tinting base after optical color match.

I was getting ready to reply that I had a "parts counter" 261 that was made in the 54 block style as a replacement for the 216 in larger trucks. When I bought it, Warren had taken it to the machine shop for inspection but I saw pictures of it complete beforehand. The color to me looked a lot like "caterpillar yellow". That might be a starting point to see how close it was to your original paint.
