Hi all,
I was wondering if there is a difference in cooling my 250 Chevy 6.
I installed a GMB aluminum water pump,It is a taller model compared to the standard 250 cast iron pump I had before.
I think the aluminum water pump is for a 292 or just a late model 250???
Ever since I put the taller aluminum water pump on,,, it runs hotter.
Does that make sense?
I would think all the inline 194-292 water pumps would all be interchangeable as far as for cooling goes???

The 292's I've seen have a bigger hole so a 292 pump wont usually fit in a 194-230-250

as far as I know the 194-230-250 is all the same but I'm not sure.

the 250's will fit a 292 block but:
the 292's have a bigger propeller to pump more water. the 292 has a different type operation in that it has a bypass short hose up to the thermostat housing. the 292 pump bypass is there to keep steam pockets from building up in the head and it keeps the water temperature more even to keep the cylinder wear even between front and back. it is a true truck motor and designed for the most part not to overheat.

yes
BUT
it (292) has a large 1-1/2'' bypass port and unless you connect that to a thermostat housing .... you're loosing water.

you can tap off the extra port on the pass side for a sensor, or drill thru the cast iron and tap a new hole for a fan sensor (if needed).

The later 292 pumps do not have the big by-pass hose. Found this out when we built my first 292 and was fortunate enough to find a NAPA store that had both 292 specific styles in stock.

My 292 has a plate on the back of the pump, if that's not there you will have heating problems due to the water circulation around the first cylinder.

I have not seen this metal plate before. Is this plate underneath the impeller?
Also can't you just block off the bypass hole & use it that way?

The plate is on the back of the pump, it shields the impeller to circulate the water through the pump and not pull water from around #1 cylinder. I don't know all the intracicies of the water flow in a 292 as compared to the 250, but only have been informed the plate is necessary for proper water flow in the 292. I don't know if blocking the bypass will improve anything.

On my stock 250 water pump there was not a plate present but I purchased an aftermarket pump and there is a plate on the impeller and it seemed to help the cooling process. On what the difference or inter-change is between the 292 and 250 I am not totally sure. Another thing is that I went from the tall type cast pump to a short cast pump (before the aluminum one) and is didn't change a thing cooling wise.
