I've made a cardinal mistake as a rookie engine rebuilder. I didn't make complete notes, either mental or on paper, when tearing down my Chevy 235. In reassembling my Rocker Arms I've run into a problem of sequence by number and position on the Rocker Shafts. The very popular reprint of a factory manual lists them so:
Rocker Arm# Rocker Type Cylinder#
7 L.H.Ex. 1-3-5 Ex.
8 R.H.Ex. 2-4-6 Ex.
3 L.H.In. 2-4-6 In.
4 R.H.In. 1-3-5 In.
Can this be correct because the Rockers don't line up corectly with the valve stems?
When installed to line up correctly with the stems mine read like this:

Rocker Arm# Rocker Type Cylinder #
3 L.H.Ex. 1-3-5 Ex.
4 R.H Ex. 2-4-6 Ex.
7 L.H.In. 2-4-6 In.
8 R.H.In. 1-3-5 In.
This is reading left to right,water pump to
flywheel while facing the manifold(s) side.
Where have I gone wrong or is it possible a
set of rockers from a different GM L6 was installed in some earlier life of my engine? Go ahead take your shots at me,but staighten me out too!

Motors Repair manual from the 1960's or so should show a good layout picture of the correct angle of each rocker..Make sure the oil holes are on the bottom if I remember right.There was a time not too long ago I had them apart all the time but each time I had to refer to Motors to be sure..If you don't find a manual let me know by E Mail and I will describe it for you from one of mine..Good luck..Al..Rockmanor@msn.com

THANKS Al. My local library had just what you suggested. It was a big help.I knew about cleaning and positioning of the oil holes, but I double checked to make sure.

It turns out that I had the Rockers in the correct sequence after all and that the sequence in the factory manual for 1955 Chev 235 I purchased was incorrect.Checking Chevrolet Service News I came across , in Vol.28,#5,May,1956 the Rocker Arm sequence for a 235 "Powerglide Engine" (my engine) was incorrect in the 1955 Service Manual!
That means there are a lot of reprinted manuals offered,such as on EBay , that can lead a beginner like me right down the garden path. The lesson for me is to read more about my Chevy, talk to people in the know, and above all be an "INLINER"!Thanks

Drew...You are very welcome...To learn is to listen and to teach is to talk..As a mechanic all my life I try to remember these words..I also repair outboard motors for a living and my favorite of course are Mercury inlines..I was trying to set the timing on an old 50HP and had to refer to a older manual to remember it's paticular set up..About drove me up a wall !!..I awoke about 3AM on the second day and it came to me that there were two paragraphs reversed !!!...It made sense then and had it going the next morning in about five minutes..Just a minor set back...Mistakes can be made by the best of us.. Authors included......Good luck..Al..
