A friend and I were discussing the merits of these old engines. He dosen't agree, but I believe you could get pretty good performance with one, with dual or triple carbs, a little port and valve work, some more compression and the right cam. With their low-rpm torque, it seems to me that with a 5-speed and optimum rear-end gears, decent mileage could be gotten, too. I'd like to hear from anyone who's experimented with a Dodge or Plymouth flathead.

I have done some messing around with a 230 engine. It is not in a car but a tractor. I have dual carbs. and a mild cam. I don't really know what the cam is,it was in it when I got it. If you have questions, ask away I'll help all I can.

Dennis: Hud 1 and Hudson(son) have a wealth of knowledge on the flat 6. They have threads on the board that offer a plethera of info for you. Check them out. Likewise, Tom over at Stovebolt can offer help on PlyDo's even though he is mainly Chevy.

If you're interested in the T-5 conversion and carbs/exhaust he can really help with parts. The 5200 Holley carbs have been used a lot on these applications. He also has the Ford Escort Holley carbs with electric chokes that i will be using on my 230 motor. They are new carbs. Tom knows his stuff and is very willing to share his knowledge. Don

Hud, I remember seeing a Montgomery Wards tractor, years ago, with a Dodge engine. It was powerful and you could get parts at any MOPAR dealer. With dual straight exhausts, it sounded great, too! I know where a Dodge 230 is for sale, cheap. I thought about buying it and rebuilding it for future use. Didn't know what is the way to go a warm, but not wild, flathead six, though.

I have a 12 Port News article about converting a MOPAR flathead to a 5-speed.... looks like the way to go.

El Plymino....that sounds interesting! I assume you've made an "El Camino"-type of a vehicle out of a Plymouth. Just the kid of thing that I like! Got any photos?

I recently bought a pair of those carbs from Tom and put 'em on my Chevy II four-banger powered Model A. I built my own water-heated intake and headers and, with those carbs, it is one SWEET machine!

Dennis: Heres what i'm working on.










This is a 51 Concord 2 door Fastback car. Most people think it was a "Burb". The work was done in 1956. One owner car. Has a 55 230 motor, trans and od.

Hey Don, Great slide show. Thanks. You've got a real sweet ride, there. I love stuff like that! My stepson has a '51 Cranbrook but he likes "rat-rods". It's beat-up, smokes, needs paint and the seats are shot...he thinks it's soooo cool! I'm ashamed to be seen in it! Now, your El Plymino, that's cool!

Dennis: funny you mention Rat Rods. Thats what El Plymino is going to be. I'm an "old gun"! Those are the kind of rods I grew up with and cruised in at A&W. Course, at the time we didn't call them rat rods.

My first race motor consisted of a flathead with stromberg carb and an manual choke that could be pulled out while cruzzen thru the drive thru. With the glass packs and choke at 1/2 throttle it sounded like i had a full race motor. Dem wur happey daze!!

I snapped this picture of a 50's drag racing car that "claimed" high 11 second quarter mile times. It was at the last Portland swap meet on display. Called the Green Turtle or something like that.

It's a 230, bored .030" over, stainless exhaust valves, 3/4 cam, Edgy head, Edmunds dual intake, Holley 5200 carbs, Langdon's mini HEI, and Langdon's stainless tube headers.

Hello Inliners!

I've been away from the board for a while and was informed by my Dad (HudI) that Danny Spring had been posting Hudson pics again so I thought I'd take a look.

I've got some old pics of the Green Toad's engine right after it was built with the big tube manifold pretty easily seen out of the car. I like it.

On the Mopar Flattie: Here is the link to the old discussion thread in the Mopar section - alot of good reading in there that would be hard to reproduce. If you love Mopar flatties, its good reading and a long thread. I still go back and read some of the contributions from some very knowledgeable folks in that tread.
