I have a '60 235 that I am trying to put power steering on. I have the pump and brackets but need to add a 2 groove pulley on the water pump and crank. Anyone know what I can do? Can I find a harmonic balancer w/2 grooves from a different engine and modify it or do I have to find one off a 235?
Thanks!

Check with Buffalo - BUFFALO
ENTERPRISES
25625 Dahl Road, Arlington, WA, 98223
(360) 652-7684

I have one of his modified two-groove pulleys on my 261 crank. I'm still using a single-groove 1954 water pump pulley. Buffalo does not use e-mail; you need to call him; you will probably get his answering machine, so leave a message.

Also, talk to Patrick Dykes at Patrick\'s Cars and Trucks .

There was one year truck (235/261) that had a 2 grove pully (from GM) but there impossible to find, these days.

If you follow Mr. Hoyt's advice you'll find one.

Good luck. \:\)

They used to put a second pulley on front of the harmonic balancer that bolted into the two holes that were for the balancer pulling tool. These were in the kits used for Air conditioners. I have used them and have a couple but I have plans for them. Keep an eye open for them at the old junk yards or my favorite haunt the scrap yard.Actually just found one in the attic of an old Frigiking Dealer no one there knew what the heck it was and they were glad for me to take it home! \:\) Got to keep a looking

We have developed a NEW 2 groove balancer specifically for the early inlines. SFI approved, inside groove is exactly where the original one was, and the whole damper is only .200" thicker than the OEM. No need to modify any more. We should have an announcement that they are available this week or next week. I'll have pricing then. Stay tuned

The "one year" noted above that Chevrolet featured a two groove pulley BEHIND the balancer was 1957. I have one I pulled off of a 1957 Chevrolet car 235 at a wrecking yard a few years back. At the time I thought it was luck finding it, now I know it was luck finding it. It is amazing to think that they used a two pulley behind the balancer for only one year!

Years ago the 12 Port News featured an article on how to cut down a 3 groove 292 harmonic balancer to a two groove balancer for early Chevys and GMCs. I had one made for my GMC and it works fine.

I don't know about a two groove water pump pulley. I wonder if an old water pump pulley could be cut down leaving cast iron flange so that a modern chevy two groove pulley could be bolted on to it?

Does anyone know if the spacing of a 2 groove 348 water pump pulley would be right or if it would even fit?
Thanks!

Maybe; there's a V-8 one of that era that does.

Good luck. \:\)

The early 50s passenger cars with power steering had the double pulley, see the one in Patrick's catalog.

I don't know if we are going to do a catalog - there are only going to be 5 or 6 parts - but we are making a website now.

On my GMC 302 I used a double pulley on the alternator and just run the PS off the 2nd groove on the alt. pulley. One belt drives the water pump and alternator and the second goes from the alt. to the PS. If you have a generator, I think the alt, pulley will fit it. Joe

That's right Joe.

You can also find a PS pump that runs off the rear of the generator; from a (pre 62) Chevrolet passenger car.

Good luck. \:\)

I was faced with the same problem.....if I did find a 2 groove GM 235 H/B it would more than likely be in need of new rubber and a rebuild so I bit the bullet and went with the modified 250 H/B from Buffalo. Aside from being pricey and needing to be rebalanced it works great. I didn't really care for the 2-belt over the waterpump idea so I went a different direction. By doing this, I can run a 6 blade fan and have no clearance issues with the alt, the H/B or the A/C compressor.

Another option is to run your alternator from the passengers side of the engine. I made my own mount that sandwiches the thermostat housing and runs only one belt over the stock adaptor plate mounted early waterpump onto the H/B in my 54 truck with 1960 engine. I'm running my a/c compressor mounted low on the driver'd side and off the front groove of the H/B. I have room above it to run a p/s pump off the 2nd groove in the A/C compressor.

Running one belt over the water pump eliminates all the pulley hunting and I'm sure puts less stress on the early-style pump. Several of the vendors offer a driver's side alt bracket that sandwiches the thermostat housing....I just used their idea and flipped it over. Had to add a little piece to the timing cover to make a stronger terminal mount for my alt. tensioner. I've got some pictures in my webshots album "Tips and tricks" on page 5 & 6 of the setups that might help.

Dave,

A really nice installation. Looks like a good way to install the modern conveniences on the stvebolt. Where did you get the six-blade fan?
