Running casting numbers on parts trucks and found this one:

3921968

Checking it against the casting numbers list it comes up as a 64-76 chev/olds 216.

They made a 216 in this era? I've never heard of it. Looks like the 194-230-250-292 series.

What's the scoop on this one?

Dear Tom;

They (GM) discontinued the (original) 216.5 CID engine in 1952.

I seem to remember an Oldsmobile 6 cyl in the mid 70s. Check a Motors Manual under (Olds) engine specifications. Could be an "off spring" of the 194/230 back then.

Good luck. \:\)

Yeah, I can probably get a picture. Looks like a 230, down to the red paint.

Definitely seems like a misprint. But its right here on our own list!

4/5ths of the way down the first page. There's a handful of late 60s early 70s 216s listed (so it's not just this one number).

Tom,

In '64 and '65 Pontiac Tempests could be had with a 215 six. It looked just like the Chevy 194/230/250 engines, but had a bore/stroke of 3.7510 X 3.25.

To my knowledge, no other GM vehicle used this engine.

Dear Dennis;

That's the one, just before the OHC engine came out.

Good call. \:\)

Have pictures and will post this afternoon once I get home. It's in a 67-72 (don't know these trucks well, has quad headlights) GMC. Engine has a rebuild tag with a bunch of info on the build. Block is pretty much free of grease and grime. I've definitely got the number right.

Interesting.

Tom,

All American '67-'72 Chevy and GMC pickups had just two head lights.

I meant to add that '58-'61 Chevy pickups had quad lights in the states.

Some one put a used engine from a "bone yard" in a Chevy truck is all.
Happens all the time in the "Used Car" biz.

Happy trails. \:\)

Yep, John, you're right, that certainly happens. I'd just never heard of a 216 that looks like this!

I ran across it when doing a tune up in the 70s & thought like you at the time. Since that engine only came in a few cars; I haven't heard of it till today.

Only a Chverolet buff would ever see/think of it.

Be a great question for a Auto Shop exam.

Happy trails. \:\)
