Has anyone mated a Chevy I6 and an NV4500 transmission? If so, what bellhousing did you use? Any advice for someone who is thinking about this?
(For anyone who may not be familiar with the NV4500, it is a heavy-duty 5-speed OD manual transmission from later-model Chevy and Dodge trucks, most commonly on 1-tons. Nearly as durable as one of the old HD 4-speeds, with an overdrive.)

Assuming you're referring to the later inline 6s you should be able to get away with the HD small block bellhousing - it has the 5 1/8" bearing retainer opening. The standard 4 speed bellhousing retainer bearing opening is about 1/2" smaller.
There may be other limitations that I'm not aware of.

Yes, the later GM six is the one I'm using. A 250 came with my '54 GMC. Does the NV4500 match up with the mounting holes in the HD bellhousing, or are modifications necessary?

GMC, I realize it is partially insane to have to ask some adapter company about mating two chevy parts that should just bolt together, but some of the best folks I know of in this department are the ones from Advance Adapters in Paso Robles ca. They have a #800 i just don't know it off hand. They specialize in this kind of thing being in the business of building great 4x4s of many different makes and models and combinations of all. I talked to them about mating a 4500 to a 292 last year and they gave me a few options, based on overall length and what version of trans to be used and all that. very helpful people. Hope this helps--yadao
Thanks, ybi, northern california

If I am not mistaken the tranny to bell housing bolt pattern is different from the old standard GM HD 4-speed.I think the only factory bell housing you will find will have a provision for a hydraulic clutch slave cyl.
If you do use the aftermarket; the stuff from Advanced Adapters is real good quality like FJ-40 said. But becareful , I think that the bell housing they offer for the 4500 to a Chevy motor is the Factory piece - so a bone yard may be cheaper.
You should be able to find one out of a 1992 and up 3/4 or 1 Ton GM truck.
Good Luck , Thomas

The GM NV 3500 and 4500 tranny's I have seen used a one piece tranny and clutch housing. These models should bolt right up to a 230-292 engine. The speedo, clutch linkage and perhaps some other details will have to be worked out.The 3500 model is found in 4.3 S10's,is rated at 300 foot lbs of torque. The heavier 4500 model is rated at 410 foot lbs of torque. You might consider the 3500, its probably less expensive and the shifter may be in a better location for an older truck.
