What type of trans fluid are you guys using in the Borg Warner T5 trans? I had heard that you use Dexron but it just doesn't sound right to me.
Thanks.

I have been running a T5 trans for over two years with automatic trans fluid in it. When I got it from the trans shop the owner of the shop wrote on the side of my trans "ATF ONLY". The only thing when you have a leak you have a problem!

Yep, even some of the "newer" ford standard trannies require ATF over gear lube.

Dextron III. Just look in a shop manual if you aren't sure or ask any parts store...

The lighter viscosity lubes are most likely to enhance fuel mileage a couple of points. The upper classes of oval track cars use this trick when qualifying through time trials where you have only 2 laps to run and no laps to warm things up. The slightly less drag can mean .1 to .3 seconds off a qualifying lap depending on the size of the track. Trans and axle lubes then get replaced with more usual fluids for the race itself.

For a manufacturer to spec ATF in a manual box I'm sure they have engineered the trans to work correctly with it.

By the way Don the metric equivilant of Dextron 3 up your way would be Dextron 4.8, eh? \:D

Actually, its 4.87 but you were pretty close for a Senior Inliner. Bet you had to use a calculator as well. ;\)

my tranny builder suggested redline MTL.
I'm going w/ Amsoil manual trans gear lube.
This transmission shop has some 300 trannys in stock and they are flooded w/ business.
the owner is very suscessful and there-fore must be doing something right.
infact I may change everything to synthetic, ODD as that may sound for me to say,
but bob dylan says . . . ''them times they are a chang'in''

What's the difference between Dextron II and Dextron III? 'Cause I was reading in a T-5 manuel and it said to use Dextron II. I was at Kragen Auto the other day and all they had is Dextron III. I'm assuming that Dextron III is just as good or better?

There is a reason that the T5 needs ATF, the syncro cones have a friction lining material just like an automatic. If you use anything else but ATF you risk having to do a rebuild. My buddy found this out the hard way..

Actually I just wanted to know what the diff is between Dextron II and Dextron III. I already know that it's ATF.

Dextron III is just better Dexron II. The newer ATF's are the reason why automatics go for >150000 miles without a rebuild.

Okay, thanks. That's what I'll be using. Expecially since that's all they carry.
