I've been searching for info on putting a t5 into my '65 C10 stepside and have seen many references directing people to the t5 page . Where is the t5 page ? Apparently, I've searched for it but can't seem to find it . Of course, I can't see the forest for the trees ! Help !

Drew , I followed your suggestion and clicked on tne TECH TIPS section but still the t5 page eludes me . Am I looking in the wrong area ? I have a chance to get a '91 S10 T5 tranny for $250 and want to be sure it's the one that I need , by checking the id numbers on it , before buying it . Thanks for your help .

A '91 is going to have an electric speedo sender not a mechanical one, if that matters to you. They are not interchangeable on the S10 versions.

thanks ,gearhead, I wasn't aware of that ! I guess I'll look elsewhere for an earlier model. Anyone know the year they went from mechanical to electric speedo's ?

Old blue - I'm doing the same thing to my '39. Look for a 83 - 87 S10 or astro van trans preferably with a 4.3 v6 in front of it. The 2.8 V6 and 4 cyl had a very low 1st gear and too high of an OD. I'm using a 86 astro van with a 3.5 1st and a .73 OD. With the astro you can also utilize the clutch assy.

gaffbro ( or anyone else ) - I know the S10's and prob. the Astro vans came with a relatively small tire ( not sure of the sizes ) , but right now , I'm running a 275/60/15 on the rear of my truck. The 2.8L S10 came with a 4.03 first gear and the 4.3L had a 3.50 first gear . How much difference will the tire size make in this case and which would be the better choice for my application ? Anyone have an answer ?

Sorry ,guys. I had another question in my mind (?) but forgot to add it to my previous thread . I recently looked at a 1988 GMC Sierra that was originally a 305 (replaced with a 350 )and a 5 speed OD tranny . does anyone know if this is a T5 or is it a different series tranny ?

This site can help if you can find a T5 ID from the trans tag. At the bottom of the T5 page just plug in the number and hit "Indentify".

Fullsize trucks used a different 5 speed, but it could be used behind the 194-292 type engine because the bellhousing pattern is the same as the V8. Not sure if the gearing is better or worse than the T5...

Not all 4 cyl or 2.8V6 S10's used the 4.03 first gear. You really need to be careful when selecting a T5. Rearend gearing and tire size will definitely play a part in how the truck responds. Camshaft size is also important. If you change to a rather lumpy profile, the shorter 1st gear will help to lauch without stumble. Just something to consider...
There are websites out there with gear calculators which could help you see what rpms you would be dealing with.
