I'm looking for some info on a 35 Chevy Standard. Who has modified one? I know very little about them and was wondering how much of the engine/trans/torque tube is the same or can be swapped with the later 216 stuff? I know the 207 and the 216 are completely different animals, but how about swapping? Can the 216/235 go into the rest of the driveline? Can the trans be swapped? Anyone done an old timey rod of one?

The 'key' to swapping a later six into one of these pre 1937 Chevs is the bellhousing & crossmember, needs some attention to accept the later stuff. On the plus side, the '35 motor is an inch + longer than the 235s or GMCs, can't have to much room.

Some years back Inliner Ian Reid did an article in a mag titled Mechanicx Illustrated, detailing all the tips for this swap, I'll try to find it and sent it via snail mail. I've heard through the Inliners grapevine that Ian is working on an updated article re. such matters, how long this will take to get into print, who knows.

You could always rip out the stock crossmembers and use the streetrod repop unit.

Also I've seen a 1930 Chev with a 1938 bellhousing and crossmember narrowed to fit, looked like factory. Better solution would be something that would accept a bellhousing that would work with the later trans. And yes, many of these have been modifed over the years for the later motors.

Cheers

Thanks Jim. Is Ian Reid a current inliner?

"He sort of looks like old Ginger, there, doesn't he?"

Yes Paul, Ian is an Inliner but has no computer. He is driving his 1932 Chev coupe with a 302 GMC and is building another '32 Coupe with a 261 in it for a daily driver. His phone number is in the roster or PM and I will get you a phone number.

Hi 6inarow,
I built a 1936 chevy coupe, If you are going to swap out the old engine and put a later model engine in, like a 235, why no change the whole drive line. I pulled the old 207 engine, tranny and torque tube out and used a 250 engine and a 350 transmisson. I also used a 10 bolt rear from a 1977 nova. the 250 engine has motor mounts on the side, rather the on the front like the 216 and 235. I got motor mounts form Chassis eng. The 36 had a transmission mount that went across the frame but I modified it so the 350 mount would bolt in. the drive shaft had to be shortend about 2 inches, and the car ran really good.. The 250 engine fits in there, but is tight. you have to get it way back almost touching the firewall,
I think if you are going to go to all the trouble of changing to a later model engine, I'd do the whole drive line. sure saves a lot of trouble
