Well, the 250 was shot. What would you guys recomend for an inline 6 that will make power easiest and still find parts for fairly easily.

Stick with a 250.

What type of vehicle, use etc.???

I am planning on building a 32 ford roadster. I want to do something other than sbc and figure I don't need too much power.

A Deuce! Well why not use a Ford 300 inline six. It has 4" bores standard. It has 7 main bearings standard. It has a 12 port head standard. It has a 4" stroke standard. It has FACTORY AVAILABLE cast header-style dual exhausts, forged steel crankshafts, fuel injection - even a factory crossflow billet aluminum race-only head. The back of block is the same as a small block V8 so trans choices are many.

There are tons of aftermarket parts available.

You have the potential for in excess of 600 naturally aspirated HP (Well, OK, maybe 300 HP on the street.)

Good choice.

For the money - best choice.

I get so tired of seeing the same (350/350/9" Ford)in the majority of 'street rods' today.

I am tired of it too. I thought about a 292 or 250 and never thought about the Ford. I only want about 300hp and would like something easy. Where can I find one? Junk yard wise, what did they come in?

Where are you located? Locally we get a good number of late model ford 300 with efi showing up in the local u pull it yard. Complete engines are ~ $150 add $50 for the complete wiring harness and EECiv computer. Ususally in full size van, or sometime PU trucks.

well john we finaly agree on somthing i think the 350-350 in street rods is greatly over worked.
i was at carlisle this past week end and everything there from t bucket to 72 pickup was 350-350.

Well, I live about 45 min southeast of Chicago. I also have a 72 checy pick up with 350/350 combo but it works well. My 72 is my first project and would like to do a duece kit. I teach high school and do not have the money or skill for real Henry iron. I will look around for a 300 soon and let you know of the results. Also, how about a 3-speed manual for a 300. Keep it simple, right?

Dude, with a 300 hp 300" six, forget about the three speed; put a World Class T5 gear box in there. You can run a 3.50 or 3.73:1 rear end to take advantage of that low end torque for take-off, and still cruise the interstate at moderate rpm's with an effective O.D. gear of 2.60 to 3.00:1, depending on ratios, tire size, etc. Bell housings are no problem, just use all Ford stock parts.

Try it, you'll like it!

Dick, Kinky is right - there are better choices out there than a three speed. Try a late 5-speed manual or the earlier 4-speed OVERDRIVE toploader manual. I have one in my '85 van - it came standard w/a floor shift - very groovy.

C4, C6 or AOD autos are also around. Lots of choices.

Consider the earlier carbureted versions for your rod, unless you like EFI. Offy, Clifford, and others make carb intakes. Available on ebay complete w/ a carb for around $200. Good luck.

The T-5 is a great idea too.

I would stay away from all the "electronic" stuff. You won't need any of that.

Your bigest problem will be holding on to it, with everything stock.

I don't want all the electronic stuff. I want a carb and a stick shift. Anyone know what else a 300 will fit? I was looking at a 46 Ford, a 50 Ford and a few fifties trucks. How hard is the conversion? I came to the realization that on a teachers salary, no deuce for me.

Well, you might consider a lightweight dual overhead cam Ford inline four cylinder...

These full-out fourbangers clearly offer an increasingly realistic and attractive alternative in a time when gasoline is moving past a $2.00 floor, especially in a roadster or Model A or other light chassis. The capital investment upfront will be substantial, but the operating expense may be considerably less than more traditional inline engines can offer. They could be more easily modified and adapted to street use in older chassis than the GM Vortec inlines with their modular construction and components.
