i'm going to try and post a couple of pic's of my project. hope to have it running yet this spring. i have it much farther along now. it is port fuel injected. i'm using a newer chevy V8 throttle body for air control with a holley computer for fuel and timing control. please forgive my messy shop. tom

Tom,

I'm very happy to see another Inliner going the extra step to do something different and very cool. i'd be interested in where you found your parts to this project or how you modified existing components.The exhaust manifold looks to be a cast unit. The intake looks to have been drilled and inserted bungs for the injection system. Is that the intake from the Mexico Inliners?

Please post more photos and keep the updates coming! Great job! Where in Iowa are yopu located?

thanks raprap, the intake is just a clifford that is milled to accept injector bungs. i have a jig that can be mounted to a mill and then the intake is bolted to it for machining. the bungs are just epoxied in. the exh manifold is cast and came from innovative turbo. it helps greatly. i am near waterloo iowa. i do make it to the midwest meetings. right now i'm getting an adaptor made to bolt the V8 throttle body to the intake. it will face toward the drivers side fender and should easily clear my hood. this setup is also recieving a intercooler to help run higher pressures. i'm going to start low on psi and work my way up to 10? we'll see. tom

Very cool project. I'm looking to do the same along the lines of a 250ci though. A question though shouldn't you clock the turbo around so the oil drain in on the bottom instead of the side? I know it would work how you have it but wouldnt it be better for draining? I also like how the wastegates been done so that the exhuast downpipe coming off the turbo, the wastegate is in line to be fitted into the downpipe. Very slick \:\)

I've been thinking about going with a 12 port head but knowing me by the time I get there I wont have the money to afford one.

Tom,

That's a very clean installation. That Cast exhaust manifold is sharp. Does Innovative Turbo have a website? Catelog? Are you using a stock V6 GM injection/wiring system or is it custom? What size injectors are you planning on? What type of vehicle is this going in to? I want to make sure I stay clear of that ride.

rap, you can go to www.innovativeturbo.com . you'll find they don't mention the manifold on their site, but believe me they do carry it. i'm using my own custom harness ran by a holley computer with wide band O2 sensor. the injectors are 42 lb units and there are 6 of them. by rights they should support 420hp@ 42 lbs fuel pressure. it's just going in my lowly, dusty, presently mouse infested white 65 elcomino. i hope to drive it to denver for the meeting. i've been there before and enjoyed all the other inliners. just a good bunch of guy's. tom

I am also building a turbo project, seems it is taking forever...but I do not want to cut any corners.
EFI,12 port head,solid roller cam etc..I would like to run about 20-30 psi boost pressure.
Just fabricating things here & there & gathering parts when I get the time :-)

Innovative is working with Spa turbo (Argentina) to bring some of their manifolds, etc up to the states. The reps from Spa showed me the I6 Chevy and Ford turbo manifolds they've been making. Looks like good stuff.

Hank- yes the manifolds are cast iron; some are investment-cast stainless. I'm trying to get them to do a IC stainless manifold for the Vortech 4200.

How fast is my Firebird? Not very- It's currently mounted on a rotisserrie. However, it will be very fast when I'm done.

I asked innovative for a price on the cast iron manifold, $595 ! yikes.... We should consider doing a group buy and go direct to Spa....

Yea I also asked and I got that same price, thats American too. And they said around 40 bucks shipping which isnt too bad. Though I was surpised that it only has a T3 exhaust flange instead of a T4 one. But I guess they don't think people would throw huge turbos on them, but they did say there was plenty of metal on the flange to grind and re-drill to fit a T4.

I guess you gotta weigh the options. Having something that both turbo and wastegate can bolt too without much fabrication or making or getting a header welded up to work. I guess it depends on price if you coudl do the work yourself. I know I could make that for cheaper then 595.00 but then I could just buy this and bolt it up.

tlowe- your setup looks great, like what i keep thinking of with the injector bungs in place. you mentioned a holley fuel and timing control, i have not seen that for a 6 cylinder. am i missing it or are you adapting one for an 8 cyl? i understand you have a custom harness. i was thinking i was going to have to scrounge for a system from a 4.3 junk yard donor. also, for normal induction, people have made mention of lump ports. is that necessary for forced induction? would it help? or is there plenty of force without the lumps? i hope i made some sense. i am just trying to gather info for my project. thanks

the holley system can be set up to run just about any type of motor. for the dist i used a california 80- 82 250 hei with spark control. that is the only application that used spark control. available from any auto parts supplyer. the holley system is the commander 950. i don't have any more current pic's. my manifold was machined by innovative to fit the T04 flange. they messed up when drilling the turbo flange holes and i had to correct one of them. tom

tlowe, geat project, stay with it and you will be happy in the end. I finally got my 250 turbo finished (if they ever are really finished). My setup is an Offenhauser 4 barrell intake with the same throttle body ('89 Chev 350/ 500 cfm) with an adapter from Turbo City in Anaheim, CA. The turbo is a T4 from Innovative, a great bunch to work with. In lieu of spending the big bux, I used a stock exhaust manifold with a 2-1/2" tail pipe going to the turbo.

I have one of the Innovative turbo manifolds for the next project and recommend it highly. The $595 is a pittance compared to the price of a good stainless tube manifold, prox $2,500 at my end of the world. I personally built a carbon steel header which lasted about 1000 miles!!!!!

My engine manager is a computer from Injection Logic which works well but the company imploded so now I get help with it wherever I can. Fortunately, since it was calibated, I haven't needed any service.

This engine is getting some improvemets as we speak and will go into a '68 Camaro which I hope to drive to Denver for the Big Meet. Hope to see you there, let me know if you would like any pics of the '39.

Looks good. Just a thought, but have you verified that you have enough clearance between the center injectors and your throttle body?

GEARHEAD, I just finished making a direct port injection system with an air door on an adapter over a 4 bbl Clifford manifold and they will fit if you don't lay them down more than about 15 deg. The difference in performance between this and 45 deg bungs is, according to the xperts, indistinguishable. I considered a dual quad manifold with dual air doors to free up the center runner but too complicated and, after all, this is a street machine not an all out racer. I will publish when we get the bloody thing running. Kirby is doing most of the brain work and he knows what he is doing.

Does anybody have any turbo pictures using a stock Chevy exhaust manifold? This seems to be the least expensive way to go to get started. I would probably consider the Innovative exhaust manifold with the wastegate in it too, at some point.

Ideally I would like to set this inline up with a T3.

Opinions?

Heres a picture of a 250 one thats someone elses from another board. Though it is a draw thru type. It uses a log style header for it and a t76 turbo which is actaully quite large but he's running very high boost on it so it works. Uses a 750 dp holley. It has made so far 390hp and 410 ft/lbs but that was only at 12.5psi compared to the 20psi he's running now.

The other forum is called Turbo Mustangs, but its bascially the best place for knowledge on turbo anything. And by going what the guy said in his post its

"The internals are old TRW power forged pistons,stock rods with arp bolts.Stock crank, cleaned up.Ported head and manifolds and Crane camshaft." Also he said it has 307 pistons.

mine is a T4. i ordered it that way from innovative. they did mess up and drill one hole off center. i had to fill it and redrill it and tap it. the two holes intersected. what a pain. tom

CLIFFORD MUST BE DEAD. I was doing my taxes and noticed I wrote them a check a year ago for a GMC manifold and have never heard back. the phone number is disconnected. Their website sends you to Ebay plus has a 'Dating Service?'
