Does anyone manufacture a cylinder head for the 250/292 chevy or the 240/300 ford that has intake and exhaust ports on the opposite sides of the cylinder head?

As far as CHEVY NO. The only way you going to get one for our chevy L6 is to cut up a set of Vthing heads. Then have them rewelded ,Then you will also have to Make Your own Lifter side covers as NOW the push rods are out side the stock covers.
Plus The block will need to be ReDrilled for the bolt patteren.

Yes the Australian Ford head is a crossflow. I know a guy who has a real nice one and will probably never use it but he won't part with it.

After doing some further research it seems nothing is readily available for the 292 chevy but two (2) prototype crossflow heads in cast iron exist for the Ford 300.

Board Member FRENCHTOWN FLYER is in possession of both them. Apparently, they were developed by Ford for UPS for a project that was eventually shelved. As we all know, these mills can produce alot of low and mid RPM torque which is perfect for marine applications.

I'm trying to put together a fuel injected marine engine based on the 292 chevy or the 300 ford.

It would shure be nice to have an Xflow head so that I can have a water cooled exhaust manifold custom fabricated. It's a lot more challenging to do this when both intake and exhaust ports are on the same side of the head. The other benefit of the Xflow is that I can keep the exhaust heat away from the fuel rail and avoid any problems or that sort.

I'm wondering how much it would take to persuade the FLYER to let us look closer at that prototype design and have a few more castings made of them in iron. I imagine he'll not be wanting to give up his competitive advantage too easily!

Based on what I have heard the 300 inch Ford has a better cylinder head for more HP, but there bottom end is there weak part of the engine.
The 292's cyl head is pretty lousy, but the bottom end is stronger than the Fords 300 ci engine.
Just my two cents.

I think the cylinder walls on the 300 are less prone to flexing and cracking, especially when you consider that a 300 has a standard bore of 4.000" and a 292 will have to be bored out to hit 4", eliminating much of the strength of the remaining cylinder wall. Add a forged steel crank to that 300 and your block is good to go.

You can buy a 300 billet aluminum crossflow head out of the Ford Racing catalog but they are pricey - like $9000 bare. Too rich for my blood.

Like I was saying in my other statement.
300 ci Fords have a weaker bottom end than the 292.So I have heard.
The Fords have a tendancy to break crankshafts.
True????

Thanks of all the feedback. The goal of my project is to assemble an engine that will operate for 2500-3000 hours before requiring a rebuild. So if I can obtain a modest gain over stock HP and torque and improve my power/weight ratio that will be acceptable.

One thing is certain, an aluminum cylinder head is not on the shopping list. Too many problems with corrosion in a saltwater environment even when running with a closed cooling sytem.

I guess I'm back to the drawing board which means keeping the stock chevy cylinder head, using the available marine manifold and fitting a TBI based EFI.
