has anyone ever done any work on the intake while it was still in the engine? I dont want to take the head off but i want to enlarge the diameter of the stock hole, would i be able to stuff a rag in the intake to prevent the fileing from falling in?. im a little iffy here cause if the shavings fall in the chamber i could get detonation right?

got my 78 merc with a 250 I6 and i love it.

Dear Dave;

I would take off the manifolds & leave the head on. This way you can work on them on the bench etc.

Just place rags in the intake ports while there off.

Good luck, John M., #3370.

What you have then is the integral head. The integral head is not thought of to highly, though there is a rumor that there are folks who have got good performance out of them. Sounds like your looking for better performance. I would suggest an earlier head (194,230,250, 292) it would bolt on.

Dear Dave;

Hear is an idea; Check with Tom's Truck Parts in Miami, Ok. (918)542-3871. He can find you a head with detachable manifolds. Then you can rework that and use whatever manifolds you wish.

Change them all at once at a some point in the future.

Good luck, John M., #3370.

I think you're missing the point. He can't find a non integral head because he has a Ford engine-- right Trueslayer? You will have to do it that way. If you stuff rags in the intake tightly and use a magnet and a vaccuum to clean it out before you take the rags out, I think you will be all right. I've done things like that before and it worked. Something else You may want to think about useing Besides the rags & a vacum. Put a thick layer of grease in the bottom of the intake after putting a rag near the runner The grease will melt enough from the hot shavings and the shavings will stick to it. then vacum it all OUT VERY well then pull the rags out. Hope this helps.}[oooooo]

thanks guys for all your help i will do the grease thing and the rag thing and the magnet thing and u get the point but thanks for giving me some help cause at another forem they just told me to forget about it. Yea Joe your right. id probably have to buy a new custom head if i wanted something detachable. Besides doing something unique is cool and shows off some skill.

Today i got rid of my EGR valve system (it looks a lot roomier in the engine compartment now) and replaced it with a custom made (by me) plywood block which i shaped and all that to work. Used that high heat red silicon stuff for sealer. Heard somewhere that plywood actually lasts quite a while for this so i did it untill i get my custom head done up (which wont be for awhile)
thanks again guys.

Dave
