All,
I contacted SCAT today to inquire if they have an exsiting forging that would serve as a basis for a 4200 rod at a 6" length. The answer was no, but if you wanted to order 200 rods then we'll make them.
Ok so I ask how much a rod? US$80 each plus shipping paid 100% up front. Thats $480 for a set of good 4340 rods. So 200/6 = 33.33 sets - call it 34 sets.
So now the question is how many folks are interested in building this engine and need a set or 2 of rods?
Just for comparison I contacted Carrillo and they wanted $375ea rod!. Ouch. I know not quite the same quality but I can buy 5 sets of Scat rods for the same price as the Carrilo parts.
Is anyone close enough to Glen Self to ask if he has any engines on the go that need rods?
I can count 2 or 3 people that are building the 4200, so that leaves 31 sets...

What rods does Glen Self use? He built that 66 Nova wagon engine that makes 1000+ HP.

The details of those rods are not what you think- they are GRP aluminum rods. JC told me he swears by them. Either way- I'm going with steel, as my ride will see more strret miles than track miles.
SCAT told you they didn't have a blank- they're smoking crack. The 4200 rod is really, really close to a stock LS1 rod. Crower will do a few sets for us if you don't want to buy 200 rods. I had them build 14 sets of 5.7" fat rods for the 250 OHC a few years back (we did a group buy on my OHC site). LMK if you need the wheel of steel to get going.

OHCFbird,, how close is the 4.2 rod compared to the LS1 rods?

Getting in some 52m/m DCOE type fuel injection throttles for a fellow playing with a 4200/6 in a hotrod. He will be making his own manifold for the engine, if and when I get pictures back from him I'll try to post them. Could be some time though. LHP www.haywardperformance.com

Maybe we should get a quote on sets of GMC rods, 7.25" or so so we can use some std. piston?

How many folks are interested in a rear sump oil pan for the 4200? It would be made to clear a front or rear steer GM chassis. If we can get 10 people to buy in then the set up cost could be reasonable.

efi-diy,,,, how much is it costing you to build one of these(4200) engines & what vehicle will it be going in? Are you turbocharging it also? Thanks!

MBHD This is going into my '51 gmc and will replace the 292... Apart from buying the low mileage engine ( so no rebuild..) I figure its going to cost $1200 to put it in, this includes the cost of a used 4L60E transmission which will be the most expensive chunk. I will be turbocharging it later - need to accumulate the expensive internals (rods, pistons etc...). For now the mission is to get it installed and running. To bad no one is interested in the 292 (nothing wrong with it - just like the fact the 4200 is ready for EFI) it would really help defray the cost of putting the 4200 in. If I could start all over again I'd skip building the 292.
