Greetings,

I have been doing a lot of research. I believe that I want to use my existing manifold, and add a carb adapter from "Clifford Research" (part #08-1013) that will allow me to mount a Holley large base 350 CFM 2-barrel carb.

Questions
=========
1. Since this is a two barrel do I mount the carb in the same direction that I would if I was mounting it on a V-8 manifold? Or does it go sideways?

2.) Regardless of which way it goes, I am assuming that due to the difference between this carb and my single OEM barrel one that I will have to use different throttle linkage.

I have looked at Jeff Halton's article on "Throttle Linkage for Inlines." I can tell that he used some additional items.

I am thinking of ordering the linkage kit from StoveBolt and trying to see if I can fabricate from that what I need.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I have been busy doing almost the same thing to the 261 engine in my 57 Chevy 3/4 tn. PU. I went with the Holley/Weber progressive 32/36 carb on the Langdon 2-1 brl. adapter and the original intake. I also used the linkage adapter kit from Langdons and oriented the carb with the bowl to the front of the engine as Holley reccomends. This will put the veturies 90 degrees from the intake. This setup works out pretty well with the stock foot feed and linkage to the carb. With a converted oil bath air cleaner the whole thing looks very period correct. I can take some pics for you in the next few days if you are interested.

Yes Mike; I would love to see pictures of your setup. Are you pleased with the single progressive carb? I am still toying with the idea of the Holley 2-barrel 350 CFM carb.

Hmmm; I wonder if Langdon's linkage would also work with the Holley 350 large base carb?

Let me hear from you please.

I mounted a Holley 2300 2bbl on a stock 261 intake . I cut open the top of the intake where the carb mounts,did some grinding anmd smoothing, made a carb mounting plate,drilled and tapped some holes to secure it, bolted on a Holley originall from a IHC 266 V-8.A home made bell crank transfers the movement of the stock linkage rod the carb.Rated as a 2bbl, this Holley is 300cfm.Carburates very well,better power , far better throttle response than a Rochester single barrel.
My original set up was a Rochester 2GC 2 bbl on a typical tapered adapter.It ran ok at lower speeds but never performed well at wide open throttle despite jetting changes. I suspect the adapter was causing wierd airflow.

I found the same problem of "It ran ok at lower speeds but never performed well at wide open throttle despite jetting changes" myself with both the two bbl or a 4 bbl on a Offy manifold.
I went to a 2x1 and bingo things went a whole lot better. I believe that it has more to do with even distrubution of the gases from the carbs to the intake on the head. With a carb only in the middle, high rpm's will vaporize the fuel real good but at low rpm's it has a tendency to "puddle". If you reverse to set up to get it to run good at low rpm's them it don't want to run worth a crap at high rpm's. Where as a 2x1 with the correct carb's will do both because the carbs are more equal distance to all the head intake ports. (the raw gas has more equal time to vaproize before reaching the intake valves) and that way all 6 cyl. are more ballanced.

Old Fart,good name, I run a 4 bbl on a Clifford heated intake on my other 261, runs quite well,no problems at all.The heat on an aluminum manifold makes all the difference on a street engine I think.

Question for Old Fart Ed:

So with your Offy manifold, did you have to install a heat inlet plate? One reason I wanted to stick with my OEM intake was to avoid having to deal with a heating hassle.

I have used both before (heated and non-heated) found bouth of them to work but the heated manifold was defiantly better for a daily driver. One that I have tried had the heat box that bolted to the stock manifold, that been severial years ago and not sure of the brand of manifold.?
I was just not happy with the unheated manifold on a daily driver.
My advice would be to put in a little more work or hassle (as you call it) and rig up some kind of heat for the manifold, so maybe you won't be dissapointed like I was.

so Mike did you see much difference using a staged 2bbl on a stock intake? How does that run vs. a larger Holley 2bbl?

I'm having and intake dilemna myself. Clifford 4bbl vs. offy 2X1 vs. progressive 2bbl or larger 2bbl on stock intake? Hood clearance and money are issues.

Right now i have a leaky 1bbl Rochester on stock intake with Fentons...on a '59 chevy.

Adapter 08-1013 is for a Clifford intake only. It won't work with a stock 1bbl intake.

I really like the Holley/Weber 5200 two stage 2 barrel. My experience has been that you need to jet it up quite a bit to get good top end performance, but you can get away with a hellacious jet on the secondary and still use something not so wild on the primary. Right now I have a 140 on the primary and a jet I ran a 1/16" drill bit through on the secondary. I'm getting a kit soon so I can set up everything just right. Now here's an important consideration for many of us: a weber from Langdon's is $65, adapter $15, jet kit from Carb.Net $50, couple junk yard carbs for parts $20: now you have a lot to play with and you've only spent $150. These carbs PERFORM, cold, hot, in between; they work.

Dear Eddie;

Let's take another look at this, okay?

You want a little more power without a big gas bill. Perhaps a better sounding car too.

I would do it this way:

Use the Clifford 4bbl intake with a small 4bbl carb because they have small 'primarys'. For passing etc.; you then have the 'secondary' option. A 'normal' drive would be ecconmical.

Use those steel headers with it for a great sound. With 30" glasspacks they should offset the difference in fuel usage between the 4bbl primarys & your stock 1bbl.

Good luck, John M.....

I am doing the 2x2bbl Progressives (original to '83 ford escort) from stovebolt on my 235 in a 54 chevrolet truck. I installed the manifold and carbs yesterday and will be firing it up in about two weeks, once i get the vacum and fule pump sorted. Have been taking digital pictures as I go if anyone wants to see.
