Anyone know the stock jet size. I have a 230 with a single barrel rochester carb. The jet on it now is a 72 thousands of an inch. will that make it run too rich? does anyone know what the stock jet size would be? I was guessing 68 thousandths of an inch cause that was mentioned by a friend.

I think you will be too rich with a 72. A Rochester B on a 292 uses that jet. A Rochester B on a 235 uses a 56 or 57. I would think that your 230 would use about the same size. If you have a monojet carb, I don't know what they use.

I'll trade you A 72 for a 57 .
How will A 74 run on A 292 ?
My carb I just installed the other day is really rich , want to stop burning my eye's

If the carb came on the engine with a .072 jet and the plugs look tan not white and its not running hot the jetting is close. Every engine is different. That same jet in another engine may be too lean.

A 235 actually runs a 53 or 54 main jet. I run a #57 in my 261 and it still is a bit on the rich side.
I pulled a BC off a '68 250 and it had a #63 main jet in it.
A lot of times the power piston hangs up in the Rochester B and makes it run too rich. Pull the air horn and make sure it rides in and out smoothly. You can polish the piston and bore to help.

Just happen to have two carbs opened up.
The 67 'B' model for a 292 has a #72 jet in it.
The 65 'BV' for a Chevelle 230 has a #59.
From checking my 64-65 Chevelle parts book it looks like 63-65 230's could have had #58,59,or 60 jets depending on specific carburetor number.

I put in a 55 to keep the fuel consumption down. it does run well too. Thanks for all the input and direction.

Where can you get different size jets? How can you tell which one is in the carb? Is it stamped on the jet?

Thanks for the help it is now fixed ... i think. At least for now.
Hellfish. Jet sizes are stamped but are measured with a steel rod that gradually gets bigger by thousanths of an inch.

Langdon's Stovebolt Engine Co has a good stock of jets for the Rochesters. The jets are stamped with a number on top. Take a look at our "Tech Tips" for Rochester tuning tips.
