I just baught a 49 Plymouth Suburban. Its got a flathead L6 in it stamped P28. If the motor is from a P28 then the generator and ignition components should be 12 volt neg ground. A 49 Plymouth however is 6V pos ground.

Currently I have the motor out of the car. Is there a way to test generator to make double sure its 12V without having it in a running car?

Not 100% accurate but a very good clue is to check the bulbs in the car. If they are 12 volt bulbs then you most likely have a 12 volt system unless the job was started and never finished by someone. Was there a battery in this thing? Was it 6 or 12 volts? I'm not familiar with all the parts swapping that can be done with the Mopar flatheads but it may also be that all the 6 volt flathead stuff will fit right onto a later flathead that ran 12 volts.

This might give you some idea what you have until you get a chance to accurately verfiy the generator, etc.

Unfortunately it looks like someone just dropped in a later model motor and called it a day. Its pretty mixed up between 6 and 12.

I had a sinking suspision that I could just hook it up to an electric motor and see what my meter says. Just wasn't sure how much the voltage regulator was needed to know for sure. I'll give it a whirl.

I don't remember what type of generator was used in Chry. but if it is a Delco you can tell by the tag on the generator. If it is a black tag it is 6v. if the tag is red it is a 12v. Hope this helps.
