Anybody remember the Ford 262 inline engine made in the early 1960's.They are of the same engine family as the 215-223 engines. The main thing I remember about them is the 262 had timing gears instead of a chain and sprockets to drive the camshaft.

Check on the ford six site (www.fordsix.com). There's a few guys who've been looking for one for a long time. I guess they're hard to find. From what I can find in the manuals, they were mostly found in COE trucks, usually the F550 & 650. Don't know much more than that. Haven't been able to find out when ford first started making it either. A few years ago I noticed an old ford ('mid-late 50's) farm truck near my hometown, I think an F650, that has an I6 in it. Unfortunately I don't know enough about ford's first OHV 6 to be able to identify it. Sounds like an interesting motor though. Take care,
Edwin

I have been in the auto wrecking trade for 35 years now.The only one I have seen was in 1979 at My friends wrecking yard in Vallejo,Calif. We were going to rebuild it for My friends wife's 1955 F100.We thought is was a 223 at first till We tore it down to hot tank it.When We found out what it was and how much it was going to cost to rebuild,We put in a used 223 instead and scraped the 262.Oh well live and learn. Thanks for the reply,

So, other than the cam, bore & stroke, what is different about this motor? How much interchanged with the smaller (215/223) motors? Take care,
Edwin

The Hollander exchange manual says the 262 was made from 1961 to 1964.It will replace a 215 or 223 by switching some parts depending what the motor is going into. 223 heads can be used on the 262,but different years use different temp.sending units. Also early 223 heads will have to have the head bolt holes in the head drilled out so the 1/2 inch head bolts can be used.Intakes interchange,as will exhaust manifolds, but check the header pipe size and location where it fits on the manifold.Rocker arms of all types interchange.Three types of connecting rods were used.1961 to 1963 had heavy duty cranks (steel)? And 1964 had both light duty(cast)? cranks and heavy duty cranks same as 1961 to 1963.Oil pans should interchange, but may have a larger capacity or a different sump location. I would pickup a Ford master parts catalog for more information.
Good luck,

The Jan 96 12 Port news has a brief article on the 3 heavy truck engines: Chev 261, Ford 262, and Mopar 265. It mentions that the Ford has an extra massive cast rib on the left side above the oil pan; 3.72 bore and 4.03 stroke; and full low oil filtration.

I see You mentioned the small Chrysler 265 flathead. My friend with the wrecking yard in California has a 1947 Dodge 5 ton flatbed truck that He hauls car bodies to the car grinder in Oakland with. His spare engines range from 370 to 413 cubic inch flathead sixes. They look like the smaller series of Chrysler flatheads, but twice the size. Two of them came out of a landing craft. Both engines had dual carbs, dual exhaust,24 volt sealed electrical systems and hydromatic transmissions. He also has a Cletrac Bulldozer with a overhead valve six cylinder that looks like a giant Chevy six.
