You should be able to get this one at NAPA, or any good parts house. If you have a 6 volt you can use it with 12 volts, it'll spin like crazy. The time it takes to start your engine should be short enought to never do any harm to the starter. You can also find a 12 volt flathead starter at Vintage Power Wagons, the Forward Look website etc.

thanks charlie for the information. napa does not carry starters for 56 dodge. i have tried many auto parts stores and salvage yards but no luck yet. my 6 volt 1953 starter works well but i am afraid it will not last long on a 12 volt system.

Hi Bob,
The 6v starter on my 48 Ply. has been on 12volts now for 8yrs. I don't use it daily, but no problems yet. The 6v system puts more amperage to the starter than the 12v system does. I don't anticipate any problems as long as I don't crank for long periods of time and overheat the starter.

Hi Bob, I converted my '38 Dodge to 12 volts and left the 6 volt starter in place and have been using it for 5 years w/no trouble. If I had a starter that worked I'd use it and not spend money until needed.

Back in the days when my '49 Coupe was basic transportation, I used to regularly jump start it from 12 volt systems without doing either my starter, or the amperage donor any harm. I don't plan on a 12 volt conversion, but if I did, I wouldn't hesitate to trust the existing starter.
Funny thing, now that I don't depend on the car, I have the means to maintain it well enough that I don't need to jump start it.
