hello, has anyone tried putting a 292 crank in the small blocks (194 230 250). i read on cliffords site the crank fits, then you reuse the old rods, but i'm not sure about pistons. i'm really intersted in doing this 'cause i'm limited by hood clearance in my imapla and 4000 lbs W/ 308's and a 230 doesn't cut it. thanks for any advice Matt

Didn't they used to call that a "Cheater 292"? Not sure why.

I would guess it would really be more of a "cheater 250" (or "cheater 230", etc.).It's a cheater because it looks like the authentic thing but has the crankshaft (therefore overall displacement) of the bigger six. There have been several discussions of this on this board - do a search of this topic in the "Engine", "Drivetrain" & "High Performance" forums and you'll find matches for sure. The main problem I remember from previous posts is engine failure due to the long stroke of the crank & long rods in the short deck block. And there has to be extensive block modifications and bottom end balancing to reduce the chances of failure. Twisted 6 & other more experienced inline 6 builders would be the ones to best advise on this topic. -magic mike-

Thanks Mike. That clears that up. Not that I'm accusing anyone of cheating.

Useing a 292 crank In a 230,250 block You end up a with low deck/sb 292. the last pricing I had on something like this was around a grand for a crank & pistons. weights have to be cut down and special ordered pistons are needed. And some feel/say That the crank wants to push every thing out the side of the block due to the crank stroke.I would have thought the 292 would fit in that impala Your only talking a 1 1/2 taller motor. hey, i have a 250 in my truck right now. if i'm right...i can put a 292 cam into it, and..it would work? lol. from the sounds of it (please excuse my vague-ness on this) a 292 crank in a 250, you need to have new rods and pistons? just checking...because i have an extra 292, and was wondering if it would be any better mods.

If you are planning on using a mechanical fuel pump, you cannot use a 292 cam in a 250. The pump lobes are in different locations. With an electric fuel pump, you can use the cam, but may need to remove or machine the lobe to get clearance.

alright, you guys talked me out of it, i just did't want to buy a new cam and pushrods, but itlooks like i'll uee an electric fuel pump to keep the cam and buy a shorter air cleaner. so far it's a 270 crane cam rhodes lifters roller rockers stovebolt exhaust manifold and a 390 holly on a clifford intake. i just hope the 292 will spin as fast as my 230, it's fun...

one other note here guys on the Cam issue If a cam is made for a 292 It will seem Bigger in a 250. and a cam made for a 250 will seem/act smaller in the 292. What do you mean by as fast? Slow65. As in High RPMs? }[oooooo]
