I've jumped in on some topics and lurked around, but I've never really said hi. I'm Dave from Nebraska and I'm putting together the plans for my 52 windsor 265 fluid drive. I'd like to dare to be different and put a 6-71 on...but I digress... anyway just like to say hi and I really appreciate all of you and your ideas. Sorry if I've offended anyone by just jumping in.. I'm pretty new to forums and topics..

Thank I can only imagine the surprises I'll find.. speaking of find I saw an article on Allpar.com about a 51 desoto and it's owners love of the car.. that's the fun I'm hoping for in this car. It was my great grandfather's and he was the original owner..never bought another car! I'd like to bring it close to stock restored except for disk brakes and some other modern conversions..ie..injection or forced induction of some kind....I'm gonna find a way to go 12 volt...there are some enginers in my family. But in the end I hope to make it an everyday family car. Because I hate minivans!

SCAREBIRD MECHANICAL HAS THE BRACKETS YOU WILL NEED TO PUT THE DISC BRAKES ON. AT THE TIME I WAS LOOKING FOR THESE, NOBODY WAS MAKING THEM FOR A 52 WINDSOR. IT TOOK ME AND MARK AT SCAREBIRD TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING THAT WOULD WORK. AFTER A YEAR OF SENDING PARTS AND PICS WE CAME UP WITH A VERY GOOD SYSTEM. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO USE YOUR OLD HUBS AND THEY FIT INTO SOME CROWN VIC ROTORS AND FIT LIKE STOCK. YOU USE MID 80`S GM CALIPIERS AND BANJO STYLE FRONT BRAKE HOSES WITH MOPAR POLICE STYLE RIMS TO ACCOMADATE THE CALIPIERS. I HAD TO USE A 5/16 SPACER WITH THE RIMS TO CLEAR THE SUSPENSION. THE MASTER CYLINDER AND PORP VALVE CAME OUT OF EARLY 80`S GM 1/2 TON PICK-UP. YOU GUT YOUR OLD MASTER AND RUN A LONGER ROD THRU IT TO YOUR NEW MASTER MOUNTED BEHIND IT ON A NEW BRACKET.I LEFT IT NON-POWER AND IT SEEMS FINE. ALSO USE THE RECOMENDED RESIDUAL VALVES, FRONT AND REAR. I ALSO CHANGED OUT THE OLD REAR END AND WENT FORD NINE INCH, IT CAME OUT OF AN EARLY 70`S BRONCO WITH THE 3300LBS AXELS.I CHOSE TO USE 3;25 RATIO AND IT SEEMS TO WORK FINE WITH THE FLUID DRIVE AND IT INCREASES YOUR TOP END WITHOUT THE HIGH REVS OF THE OLD UNIT. IT HAD 3;90 OR 4;11`S---SO YOU HAVE DECREASED YOUR RPM`S ABOUT 17 PERCENT. I AM USING 235-75R-15 TIRES...52ER

Nice,
good info. I'm still tring to get the car from my parents lot to my garage. Seems that I might have to do some paper work with the state. Somehow my Grandfather (who never wanted the car) ended up on the title....talk about a curve ball.....and he lives in CA...

Your great grandfather's car? Unreal!

I'd agree with the disc brakes, by the way. Or much bigger drums would do. You need better brakes today than our forefathers put up with.

You don't need to look at a Ford rear end, though. An A-body 8¾ rear would probably fit straight in.

I'm keeping the fluid drive so getting the rpms down is a big concern. But that being said there isn't that much gear in the ol' drive so I'm looking at a few simple ways to boost power but not hurt parts. Although I'd love to get my hands on a hardened crank...
I agree on the brakes as well...I'm going to install seat belts all around...but I don't want to test them ever...

RAY, THE 8 3/4 WILL WORK OK BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO RELOCATE THE THE SPRING PERCHES. THAT IS WHY I WENT FORD--SO MANY PUMPKINS AROUND TO USE TO CHANGE THE GEAR SET---DISC BRAKES AND A TALLER GEAR IS NICE. IF THE FRONT BRAKES ARE JUNK AND NEED REPLACING THE COST IS ABOUT THE SAME FOR THE PARTS, MINUS THE BRACKET--OF COURSE THE MASTER WILL COST A BIT MORE TO INSTALL, BUT WELL WORTH IT. THE DISC SET-UP I GOT FROM SCAREBIRD WORKS GREAT--WHAT A DIFFERENCE.......52ER

Off the subject...how do I find my correct body color and ppg match?

Also, has anybody found the interior materials?

Well even if the 52 doesn't pan out. (still have to track down grandfather.) It turns out that on my father's side our family business happens to have a 48 or 49 FA Pilot House or 1 and 1/2 ton truck. Atleast with the information I seen on the pilot house cab web site, I think it's an FA, but I havn't been down to the business to make sure. It's been sitting for as long as I can remember, but I think I can remember it has 20" rims and duals (they could be aftermaket though) and it should have the 236 enginge (smallest of the big blocks)
I should just beable to pull that one out and title it in my name. But I'll write more when I know for sure.

It's funny for a family of men that supposedly liked fords and chevys my grandfather and his sons (my dad and uncles) have own quite a few mopars......hmmm

It's the practical side of them coming out...

I have plenty of photos of those old trucks if you want to see some Aussie ones. We had the same body shape right up until 1961.

Everybody knocks the fluid drive, but I think it's probably the coolest resto rod trans that you could use. I can already drive a five speed. I wanna cruise the country in my fun speed!

Oh, I forgot I don't suppose anybody would know of a way to help the FA pick up some speed. I did the calculations and 50 mph top speed just won't do.

I'll have to see if my father can fab up some 24 inch rims and I'll run over the road truck tires. that should put the me at about 40 inches tall that'll raise to top speed to 67.

What I need is an over drive for the truck trans or an overdrive truck trans. I wonder if a fluid drive out of a D model would be tough enough. Or if I have too any ideas on a rear swap for big trucks?

There were inline gears used in T-Model Ford trucks to reduce the speed... turn one of them around?

Fit a second gearbox driving from the back to the front? Then you have a choice of overdrive ratios?

Don't laugh, it has been done!

Turning a tranny around....I have forgotten all about that!

Any ideas what to do with an 84 slant 6 D350 van? used to be a plumers ride... I'm not happy with the body... I was thinking of maybe putting two 40s or 50 cabs together to make a crew cab and put it all on that chassis...otherwise I guess it's just a lot of good parts
