Hi guys-- I'm new to the board and have a few questions. I have a inline 6 "spitfire" engine lenth is 25 1/4 " it runs ok , but needs an exhaust manifold-- any idea where I can find one? also how can I tell what size this motor is?
Thanks for any help--

Dear Randy;

I think Langdon sells Headers for those.

To find the CID you would need to do a volume test of one cylinder etc.

Good luck and welcome to Inliners Int. \:\)

Welcome, you have the big six---either a 251 or 265. The 265 was used in the 52-54 Chrysler`s--251`s were used in the Desoto`s. As these engines were interchangable you may have one or the other. Look on the drivers side of the block near the front there is an area that is flat just below the head--this has the ID numbers stamped there. What is wrong with exhaust manifold--cracked or rust hole?? Maybe you just need a new gasket. I do have an extra manifold that I may part with. Good Luck......52er

I guess I should have asked you what year and make your car is...by the numbers you have I think you have a 251. What shape is the car in and what are your plans--stock--modified??

its in a ww2 wc 25 1/2 ton command car that I am restoring for parade use. I would like to keep the manifold original to the engine (headers would look strange) -- the engine is of course a replacement, but as its not to be a show car, I don't care that its not the smaller 230 engine. If you do decide to part with your manifold, let me know how much, not sure where else to find one. Are 251's hard to find parts for ??? they look just like the smaller blocks except for the lenth...

Parts are not to bad to get---what do you need? All internal parts are avaliable--starter and such can all be rebuilt. A block or head may be a little hard to find--but not impossible. Call me on my cell on the manifold 612-207-5853 I am in Minnesota so allow for the time change....52er

These were commonly used in farming machinery... don't neglect that as a possible source for parts.

You can tell the difference for sure between the 251 motor and the 265 by measuring the stroke. Remove the plug (not spark plug, there is a small hole placed right over the piston for timing purposes) over the #6 cylinder, and place a piece of welding rod in there as you turn the engine over by hand.

If the stroke is 4.75", it is a 265. If the stroke is 4.5" it is a 251.

Lee,
I do need it. I did't know there was a bracket for the engine, so I guess I would need it too. I thought it just fit over the carb with a screw... Anyway, I'll call you when the manifold arrives, and we can talk--

randy

ps.- found out my engine is an early 1950
