One of the doctors that I see every couple of months bought a customized '52 Stude convertible, with a stock flat six & dual carbs. The older gent that built this car passed away when it was almost done, and never got to drive it. The other week, Doc was taking it to a car show about 45 miles away, and something let go in the engine; overheating, smell of burnt oil, quit running, the whole horror story.

He's going to have it rebuilt, and has located some spare engines for just-in-case. I asked him if he knew anything about the oiling system on these flat sixes, and he didn't. I don't know the size of this engine right off, but in general, would a '52 Stude have a full pressure oil system, and would it have a full flow oil filter? If not, can it be adapted? I figure if he's gotta rebuild, may as well give himself an edge.

Thanks in advance, Kinky6.

They (Studebaker) made 2 engines the Champion which was 169.6" and the Commander which was 245.6" They made 80 & 102 horsepower respectively in that era. They had 'full pressure' but used a 'by-pass' oil filter.

Hope this helps, John M..........

Just about any engine can be converted to a fullflow oiling system with some careful planning.I once owned a 1950 Champion and a 1957 Scotsman. Both had the small flathead in them with 3 speed OD transmissions. No power, but good gas mileage.
