John, There was an article in one of the Hotrod magazines about using a 53 Olds window, seemed to be pretty straight forward. The article also went into details on what worked and didn't work.

This was probably prior to the development of the custom windshilds, we have today.

In "the 50s"; the Olds/Chevy was a fairly common switch and 'one piece glass' for trucks was 'unheard of'.

You folks with old cars with 2 piece windshields should check bobs auto glass website. I saw a one piece windshield at a car show that blew me away. It was on a 38 Plymouth coupe. I talked to the owner who said he phoned in his order with year and model and along came his one piece! hope this helps. Herb

No; I haven't actually looked through one.

However; the photos show a clear view and the DOT wouldn't allow any distortion(s) like you mention.

Last year I spoke with Bob several times on the subject and he assured me there was NONE.

It's a "molded glass", or 'so I was told'.

The single piece windshields that I have seen used to replace a two piece windshield (that originally had 2 pieces of glass with a 'post' in the center) had the requisite sharp bend only within about an inch of the edge of the glass, the curve on towards the center of the glass (where you would actually look when driving) was much gentler. There was a(very)slight distortion in the transition between the two different bend radii. I wouldn't think it would ever be a problem, unless you think that one exact spot on the hood is going to have problems, or you spot aircraft from your ride for a living.

Some of the "first attempts" at making them weren't to "pretty good" as Walt pointed out.

What's wrong with a 2 piece? My daily is a '49 buick special. Post/distortion what the diff....

Nothing at all.

The discussion was about the replacements which had distortion when they first came out.

The ones today do not.

There replaced by some to get a 'modern' look is all.

As John said it's all about the "look". One piece or two piece depends entirely on the look you want and what you are happy with.
For years we have been having the glass shops butt the glass together for the "one piece" look and the results weren't always the best.
Due to the fact that I have to have tempered glass made for my doors I intend to go through Bobs. It's about a 4 hr drive down there and have them do all of my glass for the 48 the next go.

Note: On the tempered glass on the doors. No frame due to the chop and laminated hasn't held up.
