Where can i get a set of high comp pistons for a Chevy 292 without financial disaster? Best offer so far is 2500$ for a custom made set.Engine has 74 cc head and 0,40 bore which suggests a dished piston with 8-10cc dish size, for compression ratio 10/1.

The only off the shelf high(?) compression piston is the Federal Mogul #980P their LPG piston. The piston has about half the dish of the original piston and is 9.0/1 in a stock 292. You should get 10/1 with the 74 cc head and that piston. The 980P is about $350-400 here.

Don't Chevy (not Olds) 307 pistons fit right in, too?

Not on the 292. The 307 piston doesn't have enough compression height. The 307 will work in the 250.

Just by looking @ them both I would say you will have 8.2- 8.7 to 1 compression ratio.Depends on your deck height.With stock cyl head,put on a small chamber 194 head then you will be above 9 to 1

Your first link is a .040 over stock. The second set says?? for a standard block which to me says Not for a over bore. The stock
307s will give you alittle more then 9-1 with a stock 230,250 head and closer to 10-1 Or just over depending On the mill work
off the head Or decking of the block.

If you look @ both sets,one is dished all around the side w/valve reliefs & the other set is dished in the middle + valve reliefs.
My 307 forged TRW's are a flat top w/4 valve reliefs,no dish on the sides or in the middle.
Those sets on Ebay look to be lower compression pistons IMO

Sorry it took awhile to get back to this, and i didn't mean for it to be in Fleetlines's thread. I thought both sets were low compression, when I went to look at a new set, they were full of valve reliefs and had the large chamfer on the edge. I wish someone made a cast piston with a true flat top like the OEMS were. These look to be universal to me. Thanks for the information, Joe.

What is the bore, wristpin and PDH of the 292?
I may use harley davidson pistons in my 1954 261, same bore, .927 wristpin and they are coated flat tops.

292 piston comp height is 2.025. .927 pin , 3.875 bore
261 is 2.08(atleast #'s i have)

The price on the LPG pistons varies quite a bit, from one retailer to the next flaps. One quoted me $80 ea. The best price was from the machine shop that bored the block. $40 ea, or $240 for the set.
